I’ve tried Haiku’s default E-Mail app, and now Beam, but am still on the lookout for a nicer mail user agent.
Is Icedove worth trying? I used to use Eudora and Thunderbird back in the day, so I am hoping that Icedove might fit my needs. Does it work without any hiccups on haiku? I seem to recall that it was perhaps possible to set a master password in Thunderbird and am hoping that this might also be possible in Icedove… could someone confirm whether Icedove in Haiku has this capability? Thank you!
Icedove is pretty much just like Thunderbird, though I’m used to Thunderbird on a Mac with a menu bar and everything so finding where things are is a bit frustrating.
In Zeta OS, I installed and still use Thunderbird and, in Haiku, I installed and use Icedove, which is Thunderbird. The Zeta version is master and I copy over mail files weekly to update Haiku and Windows. Also an excerpt for edification, ”Icedove is the rebranding of Mozilla Thunderbird by the Debian Project” (https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Icedove).
I have used Thunderbird for decade or two…heck, maybe even earlier when it first came out, due to its ubiquity and interoperability among different OS platforms.
Also, I like Beam when I was using modems/DSL and had a local ISP for email using defined POP/SMTP services when all email data was ascii text only…none of this HTML stuff we have now. The good ole days…
I’ve got Icedove installed now and it’s unified account function and html message rendering as well as the primary password safeguard are definitely nice to have. I guess in return for the plusses you do lose the ability to use the People attributes as your contacts database so that is a pity. But I suppose that if I can get Icedove to sync to my Fastmail addressbook, it might not be too bad after all.
Has anyone on the forum gotten Icedove to sync to Fastmail via Oauth?
I must say that I found Beam to be very impressive after E-Mail. But like you say it does seem to baulk at HTML messages, perhaps even more than how Eudora got left behind by HTML emails.
Incidentally, I tried to set up Icedove to work with Fastmail via Oauth but for some reason, the installer bailed out half way through the process.
Anyone here gotten Icedove to work with Fastmail’s address book?
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve not tried that yet because I understand that it relies on Haiku’s default Mail app to set up mail accounts and it doesn’t work well with some IMAP accounts I use such as Fastmail and Vivaldi.
After that, I tried Beam and then Icedove and I was relieved to see that Icedove was able to get all my IMAP accounts working until suddenly my accounts and messages suddenly disappeared and there was no way to get it back to normal. Anyway, since then I’ve resorted to using webmail on Haiku and more or less given up on mail user agents…
Totally understandable: using the mail_daemon is can be a bit of hit or miss.
I have found out a way to use POP to download emails from Gmail. Setting up a POP/SMTP account in mail_daemon this way allows me to download Gmail messages to Haiku, where I can view and reply to messages using EmailViews without interfering with the IMAP modus operandi used in the cell phone and web Gmail app (even the messages sent from Haiku appear in Gmail’s “Sent” folder). I should create and post instructions on how to do it.
I don’t know much about Fastmail and Vivaldi; did IMAP not work? Did you try POP3?
I don’t think I tried POP3 with Fastmail or Vivaldi, but I did use it with my provider’s webmail account and actually that one worked. So it may be something to do with encryption incompatibility or something with the IMAP accounts which did not work. With regard to Fastmail, it may also have something to do with the fact that I have different email alias for all the online accounts I use. It improves security in that bad guys are unable to identify me by my email address but it does mean that old school email clients may get confused. Ah well!
I wish GyazMail was available for Haiku. It’s a well-written Japanese mail client, which I’ve been using for years on Mac OS X. The author is very kind and welcoming, maybe he could be convinced to consider a Haiku version ?
Thanks for suggesting Trojita. It worked perfectly with Fastmail and seems to be a slick piece of software! One question. Is Trojita strictly a single email account app? I can’t find a way to add more than one IMAP and SMTP account…
Hello @chaplintokyo glad to know that you found my suggestion useful
About using more than one account in Trojita, looks like is not possible within the application, but you can set different profiles and point to one or another, by starting the application from the command line. On this link there is more information about how to do it (I never tried in Haiku, so I cannot confirm if works orn not)
trojita supports multiple profiles which allows the use of multiple IMAP accounts. Multiple instances of trojita, each using a different profile, may be started concurrently. A profile may be specified using -p
