What beta3 features should be highlighted in the release notes?

Thanks. I already did, so I will wait until we get closer.

The release notes are on the trac wiki and besides the devs, other people can get write permissions there as well if neded (then it’s less work for the devs)

I would be open to editing them and other items on the wiki.

You should now have permissions to edit the wiki.

Thanks PulkoMandy!

Is there anything related to our build process (make, gcc, etc.) that should be noted? Hard to tell from bug tracker.

I think the ongoing Intel driver fixes will be a blast.

Agreed, but I don’t think those have been merged yet from what I can tell (I could be wrong though).
If they aren’t, hopefully we can get them in before Beta 3 assuming they don’t include any major regressions.

@PulkoMandy - Is there anything else concerning WebPositive that should be noted in the release notes? Specifically the queued up changes when the B3 release process starts.

At this point I do not know exactly which version of WebKit will be shipped. The latest ones are crashing on start, and on top of that, WebKit did some quite big refactor that requires adjusting a lot of code. I don’t know if I’ll manage to get all of that ready in time, or if I’ll have to tag some older version.

In any case, there is nothing more than what’s in the release notes but we’ll add the exact webkit version.

10-4. Thanks for all you do.

Here are the features I am looking forward to the most:

  • The system update can now resume downloads in case it is interrupted.
    (saves a lot of time)
  • Numerous stability and user improvements to HaikuDepot
    (hell yeah)
  • Deprecated Python 2 and switched to Python 3.7 as the default version of Python shipped with Haiku
(that should fix my problems with pip)
  • Inroduced a new version of the “net services” APIs…
(I wonder if YouTube will work in the new web+)
  • The application icon in the shutdown dialog is animated when the application does not want to close.
    (I really like animated icons)
  • Numerous stability and compatibility improvements to MediaPlayer.
    (hell yeah)
  • Search shortcuts, for example, typing “w Haiku” in the address bar will open the Wikipedia article about Haiku.
  • Support for SD/MMC readers on the PCI bus (SDHCI).
(SD cards are very handy, and it might be useful for when it becomes possible to run haiku on ARM devices, like Raspberry Pi)
  • Improved virtio driver performance.
  • Updated network drivers to match with FreeBSD 13.
  • Improved USB 3 drivers.
  • Improved Intel_Extreme drivers.
(GPU drivers are the most important thing in a modern personal computer)
  • Improved NVIDIA GeForce 6200-6400 drivers.

No, It doesn’t work because of something called media source extensions we don’t support afaik. The new netservice api is unlikely to fix youtube playback.

Too bad, at least it works with Otter

It turns out that was not the problem at all, there was a stupid regression in the media kit which was identified today. Revert commit is on Gerrit. Once it is merged you can play youtube videos again. We are back to the previous problem: doing so is quite likely to crash app_server, as it was in beta2.

Would it be possible to let the user decide to use YouTube with WebPositive and risk some app_server crash?
Or watch YouTube with QMplayer2 or Otter-Browser and have no app-server crash?
Something like a WebPositive add-on?

One or the other! For the time being worked on the app_server?

What about we fix the bug, instead? That looks simpler.

@X512 Could you look into it as you’re an app_server specialist?

  1. Intel extreme driver - current features
  2. Mesa 21 - for Blender 2.82+
  3. HaiikuWebkit 1.8 (Webkit 612.1)

Just might make the timeline…
