Renaming BeMail

Quote:
BeMail(TM), Tracker(TM), Be(R), BeOS(R), and BeIA(TM) are trademarks or registered trademarks of Be Incorporated in the United States and other countries. Other brand product names are registered trademarks or trademarks of their respective holders. All rights reserved.

Looks like you guys are going to have to give BeMail a new name.

Any ideas yet? Probably makes a lot of sense to do it before you start distributing betas and such.

What about:

HaikuMail

HaikuTracker

Haiku

Or perhaps something else related to Haiku in terms of meaning. Perhaps another language, Italian || Latin || Greek Icelandic, Old Norse (to please me)

As far as the US trademarks.
I went to http://www.uspto.gov/ and it doesn’t appear to be registered.

BeOS is still listed to Palm and listed as dead March 19, 2005.
BeIA is still listed to Be Inc and listed as dead August 22, 2002.

Be and it’s logo is registered with Unicity Properties as live.
There are several trademarks on “Tracker”, didn’t have the patience
to find the one for the BeOS Tracker.

There is no trademark listed for BeMail.

Don’t know about other countries though.

Correction - the BeOS entry for Be Inc is listed as dead March 19, 2005

There is a live entry for BeOS by Palm.

Sorry.

HaikuMail is very OK and pretty obvious if you ask me, but if we have to rename Tracker and/or Deskbar, then that will be just plain sad.

How can anyone copyprotect a word like “Tracker”? To me its like if Apple would copyprotect the color white!

Disclaimer - I’m not a legal expert, but

A trademark is a word, phrase, term, etc. to identify a particular product or service. You can not use that trademark if you have a similar product or service to that particular use of the trademark. The common word Tracker on its own is not trademarked.

For example, for “Tracker” there is a trademark for “Computer software for monitoring patient flow through a medical facility”. The term is also trademarked for “Power operated mobility lifts for loading and transport of powered personal mobility vehicles”. Since the two products are no where close to each other, this isn’t a conflict. I haven’t been able to identify a trademark to the software in BeOS.

The word “Be” itself isn’t a trademark, but Unicity has the name and logo trademarked for providing facial cleansers, etc. Whether someone else could use the name for another trademark depends on how it would impact this company.

In general, it is best to avoid using an existing trademarked term to describe a product just to avoid any issues. However, if it’s used to identify something that clearly can not be confused with another current product or service, then it shouldn’t be an issue.

Trademarks don’t necessarily have to be registered, which you could argue is the case with BeMail. However, since some of Be’s other trademarks have been abandoned (ie. BeIA), you could easily argue it was abandoned for BeMail.

I hope I explained that right, I’m sure I’ll find out if I didn’t.

After all that, I would just say to call it HaikuMail.

BeMail and Tracker were NOT trademarks, despite Be’s claims - they never even applied for them. Done trademark searches in the US, UK, Ireland and the EU Community Marks DB, and they’re not trademarks. Believe me.

In addition, with the exception of the US and UK TM’s on the name “BeOS”, Be own the TM’s, not Palm.

we’re using OpenTracker anyway aren’t we ?

but please don’t ruin this meaningless but funny hunt on new names

In spite of any potential trademark issues, the fact remains that “BeMail” as a name is sort of - well - obsolete.

Perhaps just “Mail” or something like “Post Office”?

Also, has “Haiku” been trademarked yet?

Yes Yes, you can find zeta on edonkey2000.

and…
i also found that on this fantastic network :

"Here is what you have to do to bypass activation:

  1. create file fake.c
  2. edit this file with text editor and put there: int main(){}
  3. enter terminal and go to directory with that file.
  4. enter command: gcc fake.c -o fake
  5. enter command: cp fake /boot/beos/bin/activate

And now you wont have any activation crap

Somehow having Be prefixed application names in Haiku sounds wrong, even if it were possible to use them. Although Haiku owns everything to Be and BeOS, it’s not the same thing. HaikuMail, on the other hand, sounds dull and boring. I kind of like the name Post Office. It has the ring of that weird, Be-like humour.

Or how about Mailbag?

Wordnet defines tracker as:

tracker
n : someone who tracks down game

So… You could rename Tracker to Hunter. Don’t we already have RobinHood?

Yes, i think it’s better for a long life of apps to give them names like :
calculator
web browser
mail client
etc…

Also renaming existings apps is a good idea like in “Xandros linux”.
Firefox become simply “web browser” etc…

I think its a good idea , so one can actually use a mail application to send mail to someone and doesn’t have to remember what’s the mail application name is and instad actualy mail something.

…and so one doesn’t have to remember what the OS name is.

BeMail could be called Thunderbird

I called my chair Thunderbird and my left shoe firefox. I hope they could fly
