Where should the file be saved? Can we take US-international keyboard as the base?
A little bit of guidance regarding the first steps / procedure is very much needed, appreciated….Please…this is my first attempt at doing something in Haiku…
I would start with the existing layout that is closest to what I want to create. Are you planning to do a Romanised keyboard or full Devanāgarī script?
This font is probably already on your system. If not, install it. Or you could go to SIL and get their Annapurna Indic font set. Not packaged for Haiku, but installing TTF/OTF fonts to non-packaged is quite easy.
I suggest you also install this font family: Lohit, gucharmap and kcharselect (those last two have different strenghts and weaknesses, just uninstall the one that doesn’t work for you).
There is supposed to be a script (bepo-haiku.zip) that will convert Linux console keymaps to Haiku format, as a starting point. Can’t find it, but maybe @PulkoMandy will have a copy in his vast archives.
Well I just found them elsewhere and added them to 3rdparty/mmu_man/scripts/bepo/ (seems the git server is out but you can find that here too) but the zip there should still work.
Okay, @san2ban I hope that helps a bit. Now all you need is to find appropriate linux console keymaps, which I assume are not the same as X11 keymaps. Post the results when you’re done!
I am now trying to follow your first suggestion….this task appears to be daunting (atleast to me)…..will take some time….my lenovo G50-70 is having only 102keys, whereas the Inscript layout has 104/105 keys as per US-international…..some confusion….will sort it out
no, the project failed and the student did not make significant progress. We hope to find another GSoC student or someone else to pick up that work, as I thik no one in the developer team is familiar with the scripts and writing system requiring this work.
CharactermMap is behaving abnormal…when I select a particular character on the devanagari charactermap, it changes to another character…..some devanagari characters change to roman alphabets also…if it shifts shape like this, I cannot get my desired keyboard….is this some bug or issue with my laptop keyboard or my understanding itself…getting frustrated….
You mean it changes in CharacterMap’s own view of characters? Sounds like a bug. It should show either the character from the chosen font (if it has it), a greyed version from a fallback font or an ‘undefined’ glyph (most probably an empty square) if it’s not found in either. Irrespective of whether it is selected or not.
Yes. It changes in the CharacterMap’s own view of character…till i select it shows one character, when I actually select, it suddenly changes to another character….I cannot make out what I selected…
If somebody will look into this, I will make a video of it and send it
