Contest for System Sounds | Haiku Project

I don’t know if defaulting this beep sound would be the solution, but at least having this sound file provided by default would be useful yes.

As brunobastardi stated, having a few media files (sound for instance) without changing the current sounds preferences, would allow to quick check on fresh install that everything is working as expected without having an additional transfer to do

To get this we should have a proper audio tester, to test stereo setups, test the speakers are connected the right way etc. I don’t think a single sound file is sufficient for this in any case.

Why so complicated!
I just changed monitors and I like to know if sound still works!
Thats all.
Moving the volume-slider works for me! It is a sound without soundfile!
It comes from the sound-card, but it is not nice, it is a bug, not a feature!
Let’s get a small sound file to click on at the desktop for the nightlys would be sufficient!
Just as a easy to implement fast solution, for now!

If I understand correctly, you are talking about a long term solution for an audio tester app.

While this idea could make sense, I’m not talking about a long term solution or an audio tester, I’m just indicating that having a sound media would answer a current need.

If you want to test “does audio output work”
then open cortex and connect demo aufio producer to the mixer and enable it. Not sure why we need to ship an extra file for something the OS already does?

A simple sound file won’t give you any more info than cortex will, and properly testing a setup with multiple speakers simply requires a proper test application for this.

Or incredibly long sound files that loop through all options, but in that case you still get into problems where you might mistakenly play this as downmixed steroe and assume your speakers are misconfigured. So not that nice either.

I fear that the average user is not going to think to use Cortex…Let alone understand how Cortex works at all without extra assistance.

Sometimes, you are over complicated!
If I want to eat an apple I eat it! I do not think about how I will do that!

I prefer the old school BeOS system beep. That’s all I have enabled. Its useful in the terminal for me.

Sometimes you push for user friendliness… and sometimes you have replies like this (which is quite the opposite).

Really, do you expect users to even know what Cortex is, let alone now how to use it, just for a simple sound check?

No, I don’t. Which is why I explained how to use it.

I also don’t expect casual users to try and use the nightlies for productive work, they are already cut down builds with stuff missing. Adding files to it for functionality already present makes no sense to me.

The real problem here is that there is no proper way to test your audio setup, as opposed to playback working.

above it was suggested a sound file would be a quick fix for an imminent need, the existance of cortex however makes this uneccesary, we can instead focus on the longer term proper solution to the problem.

Agree on the beep sound.

+1 for including the beep sound, and play it whenever user changes volume with the Deskbar replicant.

As long as there is an option to disable it, it’s fine by me

I’ll vote +1 on that

Also agreeing with others here, at least have a default beep sound enabled for volume and the system bell for apps to use.

This one is https://0x0.st/XCA8.wav only 8,33 KiB

I vote +1 to having a beep sound and a startup sound included in the image.

My sound card isn’t working anyways, so it won’t disturb me in any way

A beep sound I do not need there is already some noise (cracking) from the sound card if I use the volume-slider (bug or feature?)

One is enough!
