XMPP Haiku channel

Hey there,

As I am pretty tired of constantly getting banned from oftc by some random database with the the jutification of “someone who had this ip sometime in the past might have had some insecure router firmware” I am looking to develop Renga more in the near future and try to make it feature complete so we could use it for Haiku channels, and maybe even host a XMPP server for that.

My question would be what kind of features are lacking for people who tried Renga here (i.e dealbreakers) We already have some vision compatibility Tickets but getting some feedback to prioritize work on would be great.

Connection through a SOCK5 proxy

I use Renga with a biboumi bridge to access the existing IRC channel. I would rather not move to a separate XMPP channel unless there is strong agreement that we must leave IRC (including by the people who are reaching it through Matrix or BeShare).

I think no features are really missing, but the more we add, the more likely people will appreciate it over IRC or BeShare or Matrix.

I had already written a post here yesterday evening, but then deleted it because I thought this thread should be about Renga rather than my opinion on communication channels.

I already access the Haiku channel using XMPP with the bridge at #haiku%irc.oftc.net@irc.jabberfr.org and it works perfectly fine for me.
Can’t remember when I used IRC directly the last time.
Anyway,I agree completely with PulkoMandy that a move to a separate XMPP channel isn’t the best idea.
A big part of the community is using Matrix these days, some are using BeShare, and for those who try out Haiku for the first time,it’s easy to have a quick look in the IRC without having to register anywhere.
It would be a shame to divide the community into different rooms by protocol.
The current bridge setup seems to work perfectly fine, except some Matrix weirdness sometimes (quotes and such)

All the protocols in Use now irc, beshare and matrix can be bridged to xmpp channels, and likely even better than the various bridges to irc since xmpp has more options to share features, we can even add features to the specifications.

As for biboum, it honestly works terribly for me. It’s constantly disconnected from irc without indication. Vision will tell me when it disconnects, biboumi will not it will just eventually reject messages I want to send to a room with the equivalent of having been disconnected for 2 or more hours. The matrix irc bridge isn’t really any better for that matter.

In any case, we have no control over the irc server as it is now. I don’t think it is intentional that a random fraction of the community is banned at any given time, but for me this makes irc super unreliable. I don’t even have a way to do SASL auth because it will just disconnect immidiently based on ip adresses. For me the irc server is basically useless because I am just banned for days at a time for no reason whatsoever, and no reccourse but to assign a new adress (and hope that one isn’t banned)

Hosting our own ircv3 server could be an option too, i suppose.

Did you use the Biboumi bridge also on jabberfr.org or on another server?
I never had issues with getting disconnected and messages not being sent.
If it happens for you with jabberfr.org and not for me,maybe it’s that the clients I’m using (Conversations and Movim) automatically reconnect and Renga doesn’t,I don’t know.

Severall different biboumi istances and severall different clients

Hm okay, that’s unfortunate but at least it rules out Renga as source of the problem.
Did you also try a different XMPP server?
It’s unlikely that that’s the issue, but just in case.

I did not, I also don’t have an account somewhere else
