Since I’ve encountered other users in the forum with audio problems on Macs from time to time, I wanted to briefly share my “breakthrough”: On my macpro5.1, after installing Open Sound, disabling hda using the packages file, several reboots, and finally—this is probably the crucial detail—using the optical SPDIF output, I finally succeeded. (So you should have a suitable adapter or devices with an optical input lying around
