Ever since i have been using haiku, i have always wondered why Nightly builds are labeled (in my words), “Walter” builds. was one of the major developers named Walter?
Back in the days when Haiku was called OpenBeOS, the challenge of renaming the project came about. You know that with online communities, this is one of the biggest challenges with endless debates. Eventually BGA (Bruno), an OpenBeOS dev remembered a Garfield cartoon where the challenge was to name a fish, everyone was trying to classify by type/species, but in the end the fish was called Walter, so for a while to calm the community down the name Walter stuck as an inside joke.

This is the Garfield and Friends episode in question, where he goes on the game show ‘Name That Fish’ and the answer is ‘Walter’, which as mentioned is the source of the inside joke and naming in the Nightlies. It’s also why my avatar is a screenshot from the episode
