What's stopping you from using Haiku? (as a primary system)

I guess the other tracks are just 2-channel stereo? May also be whatever is needed for the change in the number of channels (like in this comment in 16933).

some application for working.
"System Applications and Products“
“Enterprise Resource Planning”

From the most to least important for me:

  • FIDO2 security key support in Firefox port (working WebAuthn is a minimum)
  • Fully functional and maintained Wine port
  • Virtualization support (NVMM + Qemu which was recently worked on would be perfectly fine)
  • Vulkan GPU acceleration (ideally Nvidia or AMD)
  • Fully working USB Audio driver (it doesn’t work with any devices I own)
  • USB video capture device/webcam support

Now the optional but really nice to have:

  • Linux binary compatibility layer (ideally done in a way that allows to setup a Linux rootfs without having to rely on virtualization)
  • Sleep/suspend or hibernation
  • Proper login/lock screen with fingerprint scanner support (currently what we get is a basic screensaver password lock screen, which I suppose provides a minimal barrier)
  • WPA 3 support
  • Working Bluetooth LE stack (HID devices and data transfer is what I use)
  • And finally some open source software that’s still missing a Haiku port (eg. Network UPS Tools, OpenRGB, Yubico Authenticator, etc.)

That is all considering my main desktop usage. On more modern or obscure mobile devices, additional drivers (I2C HID, SDIO WLAN, I2S codecs, etc.) or hardware quirks handling would be necessary.

(just to be sure)

What do you mean shaping up nicely, WE DEMAND IT NOW

Thats great to hear, when might us lesser mortals gain a chance of trying it?

Haha it’s only for your own good, trust me. But I’ve had a summer of SEN and work on a little markdown editor to accompany the tech preview end of the year so you have something to play with over the holidays:sweat_smile::nerd_face:

For most people, I would think a fully functioning Web Browser would be the biggest issue. For instance, WebPositive has media, basically turned off. If you use one of the “Firefox” variants, the media is sketchy…syncing issues or eventually crashes (memory leaks, I assume)…just NOT a great user experience.

For me, a reliable remote desktop app that’s 100% compatible to connect and maintain connections to window servers. VNC is not an option.

For secured communication need Cisco Secured Client app or L2TP VPN client…with Duo two-factor for both options.

MS Teams equivalent is a must; not sure how stable it is via the browser options we currently have for video meetings, etc..

This is what I would need to completely migrate to Haiku if I incorporated my work with my daily driver for personal use.

What’s stopping you from using Haiku? (as a primary system)

Nothing. Haiku’s been my primary system for at least 15 years… Everyone’s needs are different.

The one thing I still have to boot into Linux, is to use the Kamoot website (it uses WebGL) every couple of weeks to plan a cycle tour…

Uihh, presents

My primary systems are GhostBSD, Fedora & Linux Mint.

What is missing from Haiku:

  1. security
  2. a fully functional WebPositive

Requires the ability to route all traffic through a proxy.

yeah, you bet, SENta clause is coming to town:^)

No native Steam client.
No hardware acceleration.
Won’t boot natively on my system.

If the second two were fixed, I’d at least dual-boot it, but for now, I run it in a VM for funsies. Otherwise, it’s a great platform in which to develop C++ code.

1.) For me scribus is not where it belongs to be… it is not realy usable atm.

2.) Wonderbrush is great, but cannot handle big size poster for print!
You cannot print large quality posters/images

For developer or programmer it is almost perfect… But I am not a programmer, I just dont have the time to program some project!

webcam is nice but it can work if you know how

Media Kit is still unusable, and works for basic needs, but I do not need it

Please do share your knowledge. On nightlies only, I suppose?

IIRC, @3dEyes made IP webcam working allowing to use an external source, like your phone, as a webcam. It means that part of software side is already working and what you need to go further are hardware drivers. I guess the main blockers for external devices are missing protocols on USB stack and HDMI also incomplete Bluetooth. As most embedded webcam are probably connected via USB or I2C, you may encounter same blocker. So as usual, it’d need, devs with good knowledge, hardware and certain amount of time.

Yes Michel, it is on nightly, but these are tricks and workarounds I read from Gerasim (3d Eyes).

Mostly to use a mobile-phone to get some kind of webcam work… btw. it is not easy way (for me) to follow…

If you have questions, look for his Telegram account.

Sorry, I have no easy solution to the webcam shortage for HAIKU!

Gerasim is the workaround-man!

The USB webcam driver is already 90% there. It detects webcams, it reports the picture size and all parameters, but it fails to actually download pictures from the webcam.

Any developer should be able to read the UVC (usb webcam) specification pdf and finish the work from there (this is relatively boring work and does not need any specific talent: read the spec, read the code, find where they disagree).

Great,if that doesn’t need any talent,I might be able to make that work.
I didn’t know the driver was that much developed already.
