Whatever happen to WalterCon?

I was curious about WalterCon and whatever happened to the idea of having such an event each year?

Would there be enough interest within the Haiku community in having future WalterCon events in the future?

“Where’s Waldo’s Waltercon?” could work as a marketing ploy.

Attendees would be left riddles to find the next clue and so on.

Even without extras…its a good idea for people to see each other.

I was able to put a face to a Rolle at the reunion.

Since BeGeisert represents the European region it would be cool to have WalterCon represent the North American region(?).

Organizing these conferences costs a lot of money and there wasn’t enough people interested in organizing and attending WalterCon. Some of the US based developpers visit BeGeistert and the coding sprint, but it is not always possible or easy.

Haiku, inc. could provide some funding for an Haiku conference in the USA if there is someone taking care of the organization. They do this for BeGeistert as well and especially for the coding sprint.

It's also possible to meet Haiku supporters at various conferences and open source related events such as the Ohio LinuxFest, for example. Check the "events" section of this website to see an history of these events and the upcoming ones.

What would be the associated costs for holding such an event?

I can assume the following…

1- the venue hosting the conference (check)
2- internet services, etc… (check)
3- food, drinks, etc… (check)
4- advertising for the event (check)

…what else is there?

I have no idea, you may want to ask the Haiku Support Association. They run BeGeistert, and they know what their costs there are. http://haiku-support-association.org/index-eng.html

I missed the Ohio-Linux show because of a stroke, I was in the hospital that entire month.

A little while ago I asked if anyone was interested in a User-Group in Ontario Canada in the Toronto area.

I found that not only there was lack of people to come, and what few people could come had different time tables and could not all meet at the same time.

I hope to have more money soon and will try again in the spring to see if anyone is interested this time around.

I have my own home where people can stay for free, I can arrange to pick people up from the local GO and VIA train stations or the Toronto Airport. But finding a time when more than two or three people can meet is hard.

What about online webinar meetings?

An open source software https://jitsi.org/Projects/JitsiMeet that looks interesting and if 5-10 ppl show up then cool

Don’t we need a working webcam? It does not work on my computer and does not work on most Haiku machines or so I thought. Unless you are suggesting we use Windows for the conference.\
