What would haiku computer be like

For me, if haiku had a custom build computer, I think it would be a cpu with intergrated graphic intel cpu and Nvidia Turing specifically RTX 20-series with dual 16 gb ram with a custom yellow computer setup using the Nvme ssd with rgb keyboard and build in fans it would also relies Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 and new one having dual cpu inside of this laptop with a 4k touchscreen display and this is what I’m trying to build by the end of the year, if haiku was to create computer what would be like hypothetical for yall?

I’d just like to see it run on the computer/laptop that one already has, we don’t need a ‘specific’ machine, only more compatibility to those we already own.

But, it would more likely be a small USFF desktop box, not a laptop…

I know we don’t really need our own specific machine, but I mean like if someone wants to make their own DIY computer or laptop for haiku, what would you likely expect or what would you want there to be to be exact?

My ideal Haiku machine would probably be a desktop PC with low power consumption, with some not so powerful CPU. Good for the environment. It should have plenty of I/O slots (like USB and many others) to be able to tinker with different devices attached to it.

my old netbook. i loved it  but then i broke it, so maybe i shouldnt have a computer lol

In that case, probably a Raspberry Pi….

I like that Haiku works with so much different hardware nowadays and that I can use it on multiple very different desktop computers as well as laptops.
But if I had to design a computer specifically for Haiku,it should look similar to the original BeBox.

For technical details,I’d say some mid-range Intel i5 or i7 should work fine nowadays and for the years to come, maybe like 8GB RAM but it must be upgradeable, and I wouldn’t put a graphics card in it as integrated graphics is usually good enough.
Thinking of other form factors, something like a Commodore 64 would be cool as well.

HP has something like that with the EliteBoard G1a,but I’d make it more similar to the original, that means bigger, with active cooling and many replacable parts, while the EliteBoard is probable built more like a modern laptop with everything soldered on.
My Haiku laptop should look like a early-2000s laptop: Big,heavy, sometimes loud and with lots of ports and the possibility to replace and repair almost everything.
Old Thinkpad on Wikimedia Commons
I’d put modern parts in the inside, the same as I said above for the desktop, but it shouldn’t be like the usual modern laptop where everything is soldered on and you can’t even replace the battery easily,I totally hate that trend.
Maybe my ideas wouldn’t be much different if I were using BSD or Linux, but specifically for Haiku where the demands for resources are still pretty low and you can use the same hardware for many years, the ability to repair (and even upgrade) your device especially makes sense.

Lenovo’s new range of laptops got a 10/10 repairability score: Lenovo’s New T-Series ThinkPads Score 10/10 for Repairability - iFixit

Fujitsu Lifebooks also are pretty good.

This is a difficult market because people who like repairable things do repair things, and so it’s hard to sell them new things while they can just fix the old ones. So it’s nice to see some companies having a go at it again.

I wonder if someone actually made a haiku laptop from random metal and it worked

I’m not sure what you mean. Haiku works on many machines, you can check the BeSly compatibility list before you buy one.

Some machines will work 100%, some other will have no wifi or no sound or no touchpad. But the list should have dozens of models to pick from which are 100% supported.

Good to know that Thinkpads are still repairable today.
I’ve only heard good things about them so far,but I didn’t expect them to still be as repairable as 10 or 15 years ago.
Really nice to see that there’s still high-quality hardware out there nowadays.
I’ve bought almost all my laptops used, most of them are older than 10 years and the newer ones I own aren’t repairable at all (but they’re cheap and compact,so that’s to be expected)

I mean like if someone actually made a DIY haiku laptop

They have been doing not so great things in that regard for a few years now, trying to do Apple-like machine like everyone else. But they seem to have changed their mind and are making repairable things again.

I would like a desktop computer that runs Haiku AND Arca Noae’s licensed from IBM version of OS/2.

I’m 66 years old. I retired two years ago. I supported Windows (puke emoji) and MacOS (better than Windows but almost everything is emoji) but I LOVED OS/2 (my main computer in the ‘90s) and BeOS (I still have the CDs/DVDs for BeOS 5 and GoBe Productive).

Now that I’m retired I am back to using OS/2 and soon to be using Haiku which are replacing my late 2019 27” iMac. I just wish I could find a way to use the iMac with Haiku but I don’t think that is possible.

I’m currently running Indelible Blue’s version of OS/2 called eComStation (because e-commerce was just starting out when it was being developed and sold) on a year 2000 Compaq Armada E500.

And I’m trying to set up to dual boot Haiku and Arca Noae’s OS/2 on an HP EliteDesk 800 G6 with 16 GB RAM and a 250GB SSD which is attached directly to the motherboard and an EliteDisplay E242 monitor. I don’t know if this computer is 100% compatible with Haiku but if it isn’t I might look for a used ThinkPad which would take up less space than another desktop computer.

OS/2 for file format compatibility with files I want access to from the 1990s and Haiku for the future.

The Arca Noae team has zero interest in making a 64-bit version of OS/2 which I think is stupid even though they have given me the impression that they have all the source code they would need to be able to do that.

Maybe AI can do that in the future if they have no interest and it is obviously way too much for me to make on my own. It doesn’t have to be the same underlying code. If it just “Looks” the same but modernized and is just as reliable (it only crashed twice over ten years of using OS/2 which is about the same amount as Windows during pretty much any month or even every other week.

Hi sabon, I couldn’t boot haiku on the 2019 iMac, but on a 2017 iMac 27

Sadly no sound, but you even need to compile an audio driver for Linux.

wlan doesn’t work, but Lan does, performance is great, resolution is only 4k, but looks fantastic

i remember a video where haiku worked on a mac from 2012 or 2013 so i think its possible

or just buy a pc

Several weeks ago I bought a surplussed HP EliteDesk 800 G6 computer from the organization where I worked. The problem I’m having is that I use a Mac and I’ve downloaded Haiku (and Araca Noae’s OS/2 and I’m trying to get the HP to realize that there are bootable ISOs on two disks, one for Haiku and the other for OS/2 which a Compaq laptop (circa 2000) CAN see but the HP does NOT see that the discs are bootable. ARG!!!

I’ve gone to menses and filled out my info and am awaiting their email so that I can buy DVD/CD Writer for my eComStation (OS/2) to copy both the Haiku ISO and the Arca Noae OS/2 and hopefully be able to copy the ISOs to the Compaq laptop and hopefully burn bootable ISO CD or DVD to be able to install both OSs on the HP. But I have to wait for the email from menses so that I can buy the software…

Can I sell computers with haiku running on it on eBay but using old computers with modified specs, because I realized that a lot of stores sell very cheap computers that are old and refurbished, but it could be a good way to sell haiku base computers

yeah you can. it will probably be better than linux in some cases

and you can pre-install some applications for fun
