What is the best Virtual way to run Haiku on a Macbook

Hi everyone,

What is the best way to run Haiku in virtual machine (VMWare/VirtualBox/Parallels etc.) using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)?

Please be specific about whether to use 64bit version and memory / video card set up etc.

Thank you in advance

  • I use VMware Fusion 10.1.6 on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) to run 64bit Haiku. I tried VMware Fusion 11 but Haiku runs slower there for some reason. No special settings used.
  • VirtualBox on Macs with retina displays suffers from slow graphics, there is a workaround for that though https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11606#comment:79
  • Parallels also works but I just can’t stand their GUI.

I am using Parallels Desktop on a 2019 MacBook Pro 13”, and it works fine. I started with Virtualbox, but it was a bit slow. You should be fine with either Parallels or VMware. Just use the free trial period to help you make your choice

On my old MacBook Pro 15” (Core 2 Duo, 2007), I managed to install it natively, which is pretty cool, event though some hardware is not well supported.
