Video out of HDMI port on PC only low resolutions, why?

Are there any known issues with Haiku R1 Alpha 4 outputting video via HDMI port on PCs?

Initially I installed Haiku on my PC but used the VGA port. I have up to 1920 x 1080 on my 24" display.

I now have connected the same system to larger 27" display and want the same 1920 x 1080. This display has only HDMI, DVI, and Display Port inputs.

So I connected via HDMI to HDMI and after booting in SAFE Mode got video but I can’t get the higher 1920 x 1080 in this scenario. I get something like 1024 x 720 or something like that and no other options show in the Screen Preferences.

Would I maybe get more options if I went HDMI to DVI instead?

I would prefer using this larger 27" display but really want 1920 x 1080 so might have to stick with VGA on my 24" display.

I already know sound does not work over HDMI but that is no biggee as I connect my speakers to the speaker port and sound is fine.

I am guessing here but maybe if the Zotax zBox I have can only handle 720p output that using HDMI ports means I am locked into this lower resolution but using VGA instead offers me the higher?

Would using the HDMI port and going HDMI to DVI port allow me to go higher resolution and it is just a HDMI to HDMI cable that is causing my issue?

Please explain the brand and model of your videocard. Check which video driver the system is using. Look here: https://www.haiku-os.org/node/4999

Guessing from your explanation it must be some end of middle-high end videocard (4 video outputs: VGA, DVI, HDMI and display port). Portable and Micro PCs (Integrathed graphics) tend to have only a couple of those conectors. Ia your card a Radeon HD? If yes, look here: https://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum/radeonhd_native_resolutions , and specially here: https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/8485. In other words, use DVI if possible.

While I don’t know much about haiku internals, there are several hurdles common to other non mainstream OS (Unixes, ReactOS, Kolibri OS).

VGA/VESA drivers tend to output video on their primary port: VGA. Well behaved video BIOS will clone the image in all outputs detected. Tried an update and VESA driver? It will not give you full HD resolution but should allow you to use SVGA resolution regardless of the output, as it happens in safe mode.

On the other hand a (semi) native driver they don’t always detect on the fly connected outputs, defaulting to VGA, or if they do, they tend to put VGA as the primary monitor, and thus showing there the desktop, the others no suported by the OS (no signal) or not suported by the desktop of the OS (signal with black screen).

So you can try this:

 1. Check that your computer only have one plugged cable to the videocard, and try the ones that go to the monitor (HDMI, then DVI), rebooting each time.

 2. If no luck, try connecting both VGA and DVI and check if the big monitor shows as an secondary monitor. If it does try changing the primary monitor if the driver allows it.

 3. If no luck, issue a ticket for the driver/ask in the driver forums, etc, and then make it work with the VGA cable and a VGA to DVI-A connector adapter on the monitor.

 4. If no luck, try switching the video driver to a VESA one and put a compromise resolution (1280x1024) and fiddle with the monitor/TV for showing the image with no scalling or at least set 4:3 proportions (black sidebands) if possible.

 5. If no luck, cry patetically and curse the world’s unfairness.

Good luck, ^_^U

Interesting, my Aspire One will only go up to 1600900 using HDMI in Haiku but 19201080 in Windows. But the VGA on the same Computer will do 1600*1200 in both Windows and Haiku.

I will check my chipset and report on that later.

My computer is a Zotac zBox Plus ID-12 dual Atom based PC and has a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 as its built on graphics technology.

It has just two video ports and I only use one of them at a time.

Using the VGA port on an older 24" display that still accepts VGA I get up to 1092 x 1080

The other port on the Zotac is an HDMI. Since my newer 27" display does NOT have a VGA port, I can’t stick with VGA connection anymore. This better monitor has DVI and HDMI ports only. When trying the HDMI out of the Zotac direct to the HDMI on the 27" monitor, I max out at something like 1024 x 720. I am guessing that is the case since this video card only handles 720p.

But, I had though if the VGA port handles 1092 x 1080, why can’t the HDMI port. Weird to me.

The Zotax has a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 as its built on graphics technology.

So my question was, if I buy a HDMI to DVI cable and go from HDMI out on Zotac to the DVI in on the 27" monitor, will I get more res like 1092 x 1080 or still limited to the same one the hdmi to hdmi did.

I am guess that is the point and for whatever reason, older VGA can handle greater res and the HDMI port only outputs lower options.
Hi.

I have the same machine. I’m also unable to get 1080p out of the HDMI port. I was able to get 1280 * 1024 out of HDMI to DVI but no higher.
I can get 1920 * 1080 p out of the VGA port however.

PS I also get crackles on the audio now that I’m using 1920 as a resolution.
Thanks frank. I wonder if I could handle the 1280 x 1024 on my 27" display? I wish it had a VGA port but so such luck so I may just keep my HaikuZBox on the 24" for now at higher 1920 x 1080.

At least I know now I can get a little more if I purchase a hdmi to dvi cable.

Hoe you like your Zotax zBox Haiku system?

It’s nice but the ethernet is disappointing. For some unknown reason I’m getting sub 10 mbit speed from it.
