[Tutorial] POP3 account in mail_daemon (including Gmail)

Hi,

Some people seem to be struggling with configuring their email accounts in the mail_daemon to successfully receive and send email in Haiku. I am sharing my configuration in case it can be useful for them. This is the setup I have been using for my two emails (one hosted by Dreamhost, and the other a Gmail account) without any problems (both accounts are configured to “Leave mail on server”).

Using POP3 in a Gmail account

Using POP3 with Gmail requires enabling POP in your Gmail account (1), and an app password in your Google account (2). See the following links for how to do it.

  1. Read Gmail messages on other email clients using POP

  2. Sign in with app passwords

Hope this helps.

This information is already available (in much greater detail) in the user guide

Is there something that is unclear there and should be improved?

Thanks for your help with making the documentation easier to use!

Hi @PulkoMandy

Not trying to replace the Haiku guide, but rather provide on hand info based on my experience with the hope that it may help others.

This post includes info relative to setting up Gmail to use POP3 (that’s missing from the Haiku guide).

I also noticed that the User Guide shows using “No encryption” for the connection type, when in practice “SSL” connection type works for both receiving and sending (at least it does for here), and I believe is better.

Anyway, not trying to compete, but rather complement.

That is nice! Though keep in mind that practical info like this gets quickyl burried in the forum. A wiki, or community blog site may be better suited if you want to go “all-in” for such info with lots of practical examples (and screenshots)

(Maybe Haiku Insider would accept this post or a more elaborate version?)

Yes, that is just poor advice… Would be nice to have that ammended, feel free to propose this as a commit

I think edits to the userguide should be done not as commits, but in the userguide translation tool.

I should get an account there someday so I can see what it actually looks like…

Huh? I thought you need to edit the english original and then the userguide marks the translated versions as outdated?

But I see I am also not perfectly clear what the workflow is… maybe @humdinger can enlighten me

The English original is also maintained at the online tool.

WRT to the used “Connection type”, I suppose we could show “SSL” in the popup of the screenshot. But the guide mentions the different choices and in the end, you have to use what works with the email provider.

BTW, GMail is in our “ProviderInfo”, so the E-mail preferences automatically fill in working options. Comparing those to the above guide, there’s a difference in “Incoming login type”. The ProviderInfo has “APOP” here, this post has “Plain text”.

Can anyone using GMail with mail_daemon confirm it does not work with “APOP”?

Yes Haiku Insider is accepting contributions. Bludit CMS offers the possibility to create account for contributors.

@ilfelice if you are interested for such account you can let me know

Hi @DigitalBox !

I am pretty busy with EmailViews these days, so I doubt I will have time to contribute. Feel free to use this post in your site if you want, though.
