Thinking about app names

Back in the BeOS days, almost every app was named Be-something. Some of those are still around: BePDF, BeShare …

KDE apps are often (not always) k-Something. GTK apps try to start their names with a g. And so on.

Not every application needs to be branded like that, of course. I’ll be the first to protest against a hard-and-fast rule. Still, it does give some brand recognition to apps specifically written for Haiku. We could just stick an h in front of our appnames. Liike hdialog. But that is too serious. The old Be-names were playful, they were fun. So, having time to waste on a Saturday afternoon, I came up with this list of puns replacing “high” with “Hai”. This works in English only: please feel free to suggest equivalents from other languages.

The “ku” part of Haiku doesn’t really work in English, but our Dutch-speaking colleagues may want to play around with “koe”

“Hai” can be shortened to “Hi” (or even “H!”). This will also provide an additional meaningful definition.

I wonder what kind of app MileHaiClub would be

I would be careful with exclamation points.

An alternative: Since Haiku is a form of poetry, we could name our apps after other poetic forms. Here is a list of 168:

I’d personally stay clear of the Welsh and Irish ones. No offense intended, I just have no idea how to pronounce their names!

A flight simulator that fills in the boring bits between take-off and landing as a dating app.

Made my day. That’s the best comment on the internet I’ve read all year   :see_no_evil_monkey:

You will need to be a damn good pilot because it will be literally Hell in a cell behind you. With passengers dating each others, between jealousy and those stuck in a small space with their ex, luggages will fly.
