Successfully recorded voice on Sound Recorder via USB microphone

On my Thinkpad X230, the built-in microphone would not work with Haiku’s Sound Recorder.

Today, I thought of trying it again using an inexpensive USB electret-condenser microphone (a Sony ECM PCV-80u). It took a bit of fiddling about with Media Settings but after a few tries, I found that I could get a very clear recording of my voice using Sound Recorder.

Incidentally, I couldn’t find a section in the Besly Haiku Hardware Database for microphones so I haven’t sent the details there, but just wanted to let my Haiku friends on the forum know that if your PC’s microphone does not work with Haiku, there is still the option of using a USB microphone like the Sony ECM PCV-80u instead.

Incidentally, the product name UAB-80 in the listusb -v listing below is a reference to the AD converter dongle which ships together with the ECM PCV-80u.

Here’s a sound file of some acoustic guitar chords recorded in Sound Recorder using the Sony ECM PCV-80u USB microphone.

The Sony microphone gives off a certain amount of background hiss so I’ve removed that by running the file through Tenacity’s noise reduction. The guitar sounds rather weedy because it is a Martin Backpacker guitar.
