c) - it consumes more system resources, since they have to live in memory in order to be played. It especially makes startup longer.
But as a fad for newcomers it’s OK, but it’s generally the first thing I disable when I install a new OS.

I personally can’t stand startup and shutdown sounds…they essentially serve no functional purpose. Error sounds are useful, and the occasional alert (like for emails and whatnot) can be useful if you’re not looking directly at your screen (across the room?) – but I agree, I listen to MP3s most of the time, and sounds just annoy me when i’m doing that.
Otherwise the sounds done by Skfyr are pretty calm and soothing for the most part.
