[solved] Haiku install. Gigabyte A620i AX and AMD Ryzen 7 8700G 4.3GHz 8C16T

Hello.

So I was going to start installing Haiku in my niece’s new C64x Ultimate with the above mentioned Mother board and CPU but HAIKU gives me a Kernel panic.

I can’t get past it and I can’t boot in safe mode using SHIFT or the space bar.

No other OS is installed yet as I wanted to create the BFS before I create the Linux and Windows ones.

I am at a loss here as I did not have such isssues with the other two computers, one is ancient the other one is about 5 years old. My niece’s one is brand new.

The kernel panic information is below:

I tried creating a msdos partition table in Gparted, a GPT one, nothing.

I tried leaving the drive with no partiton table. Nothing.

If someone can please tell me what do I need to do it would be great.

I tried activating CSM (Legacy mode) in the UEFI/BIOS but when I do that the computer does not even go to POST, it stays in black screen forever until I do a Bios reset by using a jumper in the motherboard.

For CSM/Legacy bios :
Use Haiku - DriveSetup
Create Intel Partition Map
Create partition bfs /active!!!/
Format this partition bfs
Install Haiku

HaikuNVME - only bios CSM/Legacy boot.
Haiku500 - uefi bios boot and CSM/Legacy bios boot.

This would suggest a deeper problem with the Firmware.

Over the years, experience has shown us that motherboard firmware and BIOS software isnt any more reliable or better quality than general software. I’d even venture to say that it is worse. I’ve had countless issues over the decades, especially with Gen_1 boards.

So the next obvious question is - have you updated motherboard firmware?

I managed to install it in UEFI mode.

The wireless adaptor does not work. BUt I need to sleep a few hours now.

The other issue is that it is multi boot computer, when I select haiku in Grub it takes me to the safe mode of Haiku and I always need to select Media in there to be able to get to Haiku.

Not enough information.
In Terminal -
ifconfig
listusb
listdev

Sorry I had to sleep after an overnighter setting up 4 OSs bare metal in that machine.

I have 2 3/4 success as Win and Mint work well, Haiku works but it is missing connectivity and Commodore OS 2 is a big mess with no connectivity, no sound and breaks every time it tries to update packages or kernel.

Here are the results you asked for @kim1963

Thanks for helping me having a look and understanding what is going on. It was because of your post before that I understood that Haiku should be fine on UEFI and persevered until I managed to get it going. One of my issies seemed to be nightly haiku-master-hrev58500-x86_gcc2h-anyboot did not want to boot at all but 58486 did.

Cool.

I can use my portable modem (GL-inet Beryl AX) until such time that support is added, or just get a USB wifi adapter.

I like to use the Beryl AX as well anyway. It will be a great thing to show my niece about troubleshooting and how sometimes you need to think outside of the square to achieve what you need.

I tried it yesterday by connecting it to USB C to supplu power and then connecting it to ethernet and setting it up in repeater mode. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you @kim1963.

PS: How can I mark this post as solved? I can’t find the edit button anymore

It is a little pencil icon by the title. Don’t worry, I got it for you.

I know I had changed the title once before but I could not see it any more.

Thank you. @SamuraiCrow.

It isn’t there for me anymore, the one below only shows the history of changes
