Anyone experienced this too? Not sure what causes this or how to debug it. Any help is appreciated. I’ve reset Deskbar preferences to ‘Default’.
The rest of the Desktop comes up right away, just the Deskbar takes its sweet time?
What if you restart the Deskbar, i.e.use ProcessController to “Quit” it to have it auto-restarted? Maybe something’s in the /var/log/syslog.
Yes, everything else comes up right away! Just Deskbar taking its time.
I’ll check /var/log/syslog
Quit Deskbar via ProcessController. Takes about the same amount of time to appear on the screen. At least I know it will show up eventually.
I also quit the program and tried:
open Deskbar
from Terminal. No errors.
Nothing suspicious looking in syslog (dang, what a long file to comb through).
If you have tail -f /var/log/syslog
running in Terminal while restarting the Deskbar you can watch it live without having to open the huge syslog afterward.
Did you install something that puts a replicant into Deskbar, which might be misbehaving?
message /boot/home/config/settings/deskbar/replicants
might reveal it.
Solution found!
I ran
and found this:
I’ve highlighted the cause! I am running a Lenovo Thinkpad T480 and there are 2 batteries, one internal and one external. The external battery has bit the dust and currently holds zero charge - I have one in the mail onroute.
Whether it is because of the bad battery -or- no hardware/firmware support for dual-battery setups (thanks Lenovo/IBM ) any time I try to launch PowerStatus, my system hangs for 30-40 seconds before becoming responsive again.
I’ve removed that replicant, and my Deskbar now loads immediately!
Thanks humdinger!!
IMHO, it shouldn’t delay Deskbar loading, even with a bad battery. Once you have received the new one and so done more testing, it would be a good idea to open a ticket about PowerStatus.
Received the new one! It’s a genuine battery from Lenovo (not a knock-off from Ebay or Amazon).
With both batteries in good health, I can proudly say, the PowerStatus replicant no longer causes my system to hang for 30-ish seconds when I either attempt to quit PowerStatus or view more information by clicking the icon in Deskbar.
I am once again running PowerStatus in Deskbar and the system is buttery smooth. Deskbar loads immediately upon system start. Firmware issue? I have no idea.
