Running on a Libretto laptop

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I didn’t see any hardware forums.

I was wondering if anyone out there has gotten Be to run on a Toshiba Libretto 50CT? I just got one and was trying to get it to boot but it freezes at the seventh icon, or “sysinit2: 23” for the hardcore hackers. I’m using a fresh Be 5 pro install.

If anyone has suggestions let me know.

Just a shot in the dark: try out BeOS Max Edition (http://www.bebits.com/app/3148, http://www.beosmax.org/). May be the Max Edition contains additional stuff that makes BeOS running on your Libretto.

sysinit23 is something to do with disk access, from memory. Please tell me you’ve tried safemode…

Otherwise the IDE replacement may help, as might a new R5 disk.

yeah, scanty said that it was releasing a tmp file system. Yes I’ve tried safemode. I’ve disabled just about everything in the bios, though there isn’t much. I found a japanese site that walks through loading it, I passed it through babelfish and the only thing I saw that they did different then me was to use a boot floppy. I don’t see how this could affect it. I’m guessing they used a later model or something. I will try max. Do you think it would help if I removed a lot of unnecessary drives?

s/drives/drivers I guess, and no, not really, as full safe mode disables almost all of them anyway

My Vaio was a bitch to get BeOS onto, but its humming anyway perfectly now, even the wireless. First few boots, whilst I removed crap that was causing issues (APM drivers, etc) needed two safe mode options set by hand each time- VGA and No BIOS Calls. Now the first is uneeded and the second is done by the kernel driver settings.

Ok, so I’ve tried a few different thing and I’ve got nothing. It still stops at the same point. Here’s what I’ve done (note: I’ve done these with R5pro, R5PE, and MAx3)

Normal nothing changed.
Safemode "enabled"
Each option in boot menu individually
Only “bios calls” and "safe mode"
deleted most of the files in /boot/beos/system/… (wasn’t sure what was what so this probably hurt more then helped.

Here are the specs for my Libretto: (right out of manual so it will be a bit techy)
Processor:
P75 w/VRT
System Arch:
Vesa Local Bus (32-bit, 25Mhz) (graphics)
ISA Bus (16-bit, 8mhz) (BIOS, HDD, KBC, Sound) <-- could this be too old?
Memory:
16MB RAM @ 70ns EDO DRAM
Hyperpage mem access
64bit data width
BIOS:
2Mbit flash eprom @120ns
256KB
APM 1.2
VESA 2
DPMS
DCC
PNP 1.0 support
Video:
1MB @ 4Mbit EDO DRAM
50ns
hyper page access
Chips & Technology (B65550) w/32-bit data bus width
Accelerator: supports 32-bit BitBLT, H/W Cursor, DrirectDraw
Digital Video Accelerator, YUV-to-RGB color space conversion
Colors up to 16.7 mil
internal display: 640x480@16.7
virtual 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024
externals the same
Refresh Rate 64Hrz @64k colors
Storage:
2GB Travelmate IBM harddrive (EIDE)
PCMCIA FDD

I’m sure this is way more then anyone ever wanted to know, but I feel getting everything on the table will help finding a solution if there is one.

My thoughts: I haven’t found anything that looks like a Chips&Tech video driver on the system or bebits. Could it be in another one or named funny?
The ISA bus at the top seems suspect, but I’m not a hardware man so I don’t know. It does clam PnP compatability, but on ISA? I though Be needed at least some pci to work.

What are some specific files I should target for deletion? And which distro would be best to start from?

Sorry about another long post, I just like to get it all out so the bases are covered

any help and ideas would be appreciated.

sysinit23 is the last phase before BeOS goes GUI - it may be the VLB graphics that are tripping you up. However, JLG used a Libretto, so BeOS can run on them. Just one that old and slow, and wonky (Pentium and VLB never went well together due to timing issues) may not go well

You’ve only gt 16MB of RAM - not sure BeOS will work at all on that (certainly won’t be nice to use)

Its possible, but I had an app_server addon video driver (R3 type) but inseculous is using VESA, which might be eating some RAM.

So I will be asking for that RAM for xmas. Other then crossing my fingers  what can I try. Which drivers, files, and add-ons should I be removing to get an idea as to weather this will work or not?

I’m gonna go in and blind delete stuff and see what happens. Some clues to what would be good targets would be nice.

It really is right on the limit of what will run BeOS - even if you get it going, and even with more RAM, it will still not be very pleasant to use.

You might even be able to pick up a second hand laptop that is a bit better speced for cheaper than finding old RAM upgrades for your old one.
