I know some people here are against Discord, but IRC and XMPP servers don’t provide the “bouncer-like” feature of Discord. So to get around this I set up a Revolt server you can use instead! Just go to https://revolt.retro-os.live and register and then you can use a dedicated client if you wish.
If you have any questions just get back to me! Please share this with other people you know who are into opensource projects & retro computing…
Thanks for setting this up,having a Discord-like experience without relying on a proprietary walled-garden will surely be appreciated by many
I’ve been in the official Haiku IRC for years, but not that active lately as the content is too much to read it all.
I think Revolt is a nice addition to that, which also allows subgroups for different topics (language-specific or app-specific or developers/support/whatever).
Registering didn’t work for me,it always returns “EmailFailed”,but once that’s fixed, count me in
XMPP does. And it even acts as a bouncer for IRC when you use Biboumi as a gateway (that is how I use IRC these days). And, of course, the whole idea of a “bouncer” comes from IRC, so, IRC invented it, it’s hard to say “IRC doesn’t do this” on this one
Also I would say it’s not great to fragment the community by having people scattered in every possible chat protocol.
IRC is not designed to “read it all”, more to chat with people when you’re around and replying to them in “live”. It seems to go against the culture of other communication medium where people expect to be able to read everything?
I’m also using the official chat using the #haiku%irc.oftc.net@irc.jabberfr.org bridge and it’s working great here.
Not sure if I’d also get the messages without having Conversations on my phone permanently connected, but with it connected it works very well and reliable.
You’re probably right that it’s not designed to read the whole backlog.
I sometimes did that in the past because I wanted to make sure not to miss any important news.
Nowadays I still read every single new forum post daily but that’s only a handful of posts, not taking a lot of time.
The chat is more like 500 or even more messages daily.
