Are there any editors veteran Haiku users here on the forum would recommend which have VIM compatible keystrokes?
I’ve started using some TUI programmes like calcurse and sc-im on Konsole and thought that since I’m getting more used to using VIM keystrokes, it might be nice to install a VIM compatible editor if there are any which are stable on Haiku.
As a start, I’ve installed Neovim from HaikuDepot but it tends to output a lot of error messages every time I do :help nvim or something, which I can make disappear with a click of the enter key, but it made me wonder whether some of the other VIM like editors might be more stable.
Thanks for your advice in advace!
Emacs works great on Haiku, and can be used with Vim keystrokes; all you need is evil mode, which is available in the official Emacs repositories and therefore it can be installed very easily. However if you just need an editor this is probably overkill, since Emacs is much more than that.
Thanks for suggesting pkgman’s search command. I hadn’t used pkgman before, but it was good to learn the additional functions that it has compared to HaikuDepot!
Wow. So Kate can be used like a tiddlywiki notebook! This might be something I would like to learn how to do because none of the Haiku browsers seem able autosave a locally saved tiddlywiki html file.
I’m open to using vim itself too. I wondered what worked well in Haiku because of the glitch in neovim that I mentioned. As for requirements, I think I’d like to use something which is mutli-platform so I can use it across Haiku, Linux, and FreeBSD, rather than having to learn something new each time.
Haven’t used tiddlywiki in years, a while ago played a bit again with it, and seem to work OK here, but since I don’t have a need for it, I never looked back at it again.
EDIT: Found the old one I had around in some backup
Wow. Nice!
How did you manage to get Haiku to save the changes you made back to disk? On my install, the save changes button did not respond, and ALT+s save would mess up the tiddlywiki coding…
It did also got error messages when saving, did a clean directory with the basics in it and could create a new “page” though that was saved. But haven’t looked at it further. (mind you that tiddlywiki was/is almost 20 years old)
I see. I didn’t realise that Tiddlywiki has a history going back so long.
Ah, it could be then that what you were using back then was Tiddlywiki Classic which was superceded around 13 years ago by a completely rewritten Tiddlywiki 5 which is the one I downloaded a few months ago. Anyway, the plug ins for Kate sounds like something quite fun to explore as well!
I’ve been using a TiddlyWiki in Haiku. I originally had some problems too, but now it opens a save dialog whenever I click on the save changes. It is just an extra step to click Save and then Replace, but I got used to it.
Thanks for the heads up! I just tried it out with IceWeasle and you’re right. The Save Changes button works now, although you do need to replace the original file with the newly downloaded file. I guess the thing to do would be to keep on making as many new tiddlers as needed and then hit the Save Changes button?
