True. I mentioned rechecking the install process in this case.
There are ports of Linux, NetBSD and Plan9.
A number of floppies are required to boot/start the install atleast for Linux, I haven’t yet tried the other two.
So wich BeBox version did you used? (Usage means real usage / os install / system maintenance, not just seen a picture or a video about it).
For me I used to own a 66MHz BeBox from about 2004 till 2007, and have use PowerPC BeOS on Mac since something like 2000. I also owned BeIA kit too, but that’s another story. I used BeOS at home till I got a Black polycarbonate Santa Rosa MacBook in 2007. Recently, I have been using PowerPC quite a bit and now have 2 Mac’s running BeOS R5 (one of which boots from SD cards via an IDE to SD adapter and I have a card I installed PR2 and R3 on to.) I have had to diagnose and fix a number of boot issues recently (old hardware is fun) and my boot config on the BeBox went through various stages (like me adding in more RAM and swapping in and out various cards and drives.) I can’t specifically verify all the BeBox stuff as a lot is from memory, but I’m pretty familiar with the hardware having owned one and physically looked at it.
Yeah I can imagine the Linux install was a little janky. The NetBSD one as I remember it boots by you creating a small BFS partition and putting a fake kernel.joe there that bootstraps the NetBSD to load. They had a util calles Elf2Pef that converts an elf binary to a PEF one and that is how they achieved this. I ported the util to BeOS years ago when I was trying to see how easy it would be to make a newer GCC build on PowerPC.
I have never read anything about the Plan9 version… but it’s pretty old now, right? I can’t imagine any of these OS are “new” as the BeBox was pretty niche at best.
The Linux port was using the 2.0.3x kernel, for Plan9 there is only bootstrap code from 1997, both those are very much old.
NetBSD still supports the BeBox in the last release.

Wow! I wonder if it still boots though? I would be interested to hear is anyone manages to get it to run.
All the files are still there, I might give it a try at some point…

It worked as of last year - Re: Successful installation of NetBSD 8.2 on 133MHz BeBox
Nice, so 9.2 should work fine as well.
This is what I’m seeing on the serial
IDE 0: Boot ROM tels us there is one master and no slave.
IDE: device(s) able to use DMA, create and lock DMA table.

Is this reading a Hard drive or install CD?
If hard drive, how big is the drive you are using?
It looks like the low level filesystem is not what the boot process is expecting.
If this is a CD (there’s no context, so I’m unsure) the drive looks like it might be failing to read the physical media.
If it is a hard drive, it sort of looks like it is trying to read data past the bounds of something - is it possible there is an error on the drive? Also - the largest drive I have tried in a PowerPC machine is in the double digits (so, circa 80GiB is the biggest IDE I think, and probably in the region of 30GiB for SCSI) The BeBox hardware is quite old, and I guess it might be restricted? Especially over IDE.
When I get a chance I will boot a Mac and look at what it says around that point (though it is a different kernel and different hardware so might not really help you.) Maybe @lorezan can post what happens on real BeBox hardware?
This is the hard drive. I can boot from CDROM and used that to install the OS. It completes the install and then reboots. This is where it hangs (and on subsequent boots).
The drive is 60GiB. I read that 120 is the limit and the machine has no issues recognizing this drive. I suspect it’s missing a boot partition, but I haven’t had a chance to investigate further. The installer is fairly basic and doesn’t give a lot of guidance on how to partition the drive.
Last time I got a serial boot log out of my BeBox it was running DR8:

SolidState, is your hdd without errors?
Can you do a surface check in the disk/partition manager?
Glad I have company in here lol. I’ve successfully upgraded to bootrom 3.2. Booting and hitting F1 to go to boot menu, I can see burned CDs for r3, r4, and r5pro, but all will hang at different points. I switched out the IDE drive for an 80mb SCSI one.
With BeOS, you have 3 options, but I think only 2 of them are available, depending on platform.
- Master boot record
- Apple partition map
- Raw BFS
I think the 2nd option is only really applicable to Mac’s, and I don’t believe I have ever seen it work on the other supported platforms.
The first one would be a standard PC style MBR layout. You need to create the partition table and allocate at least one partition using some/all of the remaining space.
The final is using the drive to write a raw partition. This is just BFS raw on the drive. I think the installer does this if you don’t set up a partition scheme and you tell it to use the drive. It’s fine if you want only one partition, but not if you want more than one partition.
I’d suggest using MBR. You can even set up the drive in any PC using whatever software you want to partition it. So long as it is set up with at least one partition that is (I forget the right term) “not extended”. (When BeOS formats the partition it will set the correct partition type, so it doesn’t matter what your program sets it to.)
I think with MBR you can have up to 4 “basic” partitions and then you need to use an extended format. It might work, but I would suggest just setting up one partition in standard MBR, maybe make it circa 8GiB, and see how that fares. Ultimately, you want to get it to boot. You should not need a bootloader or anything like that. The BeBox will just look for BFS partitions and will boot the first one if finds with a valid kernel.joe. (You would set the boot partition in BeOS using the “boot” preference, or by entering the boot menu to override.)
I can probably make you a BFS partition, but as I only have Mac’s now, I realised it might not be of any use, because it would be in Apple format. We can try it though… I don’t know if the BeBox can boot from an Apple partition map. If we can get you a raw partition, that is probably what you need.
Another instance of kernel messages using funny slang… I should really try to get into BeOS more, seems like it’d be fun to mess around in
I’m sure this won’t be helpful, but this is my Umax booting.

Success! The solution wasn’t that complicated in the end
I tried the various BIOS ROM versions and only had luck with R3.2. I also found only R3 would recognize the IDE device on the disk scan. I was using a 64G CF for the disk and @cocobean mentioned that might be an issue. The biggest HDDs of that era were around 9G so I decided to try a smaller partition.
When installing the OS on a 60G partition it was skipping a step at the end to set that partition as the boot device. I dropped the partition down to 8G and got the option at the end of the install. I was now able to set the 8G partition as the boot device and problem solved (the other 52G is set up as another BFS partition).
Thanks everyone for the help!
