Open file dialog has some weird behavior

I’ve had some issues using navigating some “Open File” dialogs, they’re kind of obtuse in that there’s no way to quickly go back a folder and the folder selection drop-down on top gets populated at most with “Desktop”, “Current Folder”, “Previous Folders” and “Current Drive/Partition”. It makes actually using the dialog to search for a file to open way clunkier than it should be.

For example, I have to setup a “Favorite” folder on another partition in order to look for files in that partition. The dialog should at the very least be able to access Root (/) or open drives other than the Haiku one in an easy way

Just adding “Back”, “Forward” and a “Top” button would be enough to make it work better, although I could imagine a few other ways in which this dialog could be improved upon.

(Using MediaConverter in these examples but it happens in every app that uses this kind of dialog)

Is this a known thing? Should I file a bug report about it?

If you have mounted partitions/disks put on the Desktop, you’ll find them in the pop-up under “Desktop”. If you’ve set your Tracker preferences to “Show Disks icon” like me, there’ll be a “Disks” item in that pop-up with the mounted partitions/disks.

Hmm… For me, there’s the whole folder hierarchy above the current folder that’s checkmarked. Here we’re in /boot/home/config/settings/BeScreenCapture/:

Would be nicer with a separator above the root disk “Haiku”…

Granted, a button or “…” entry to quickly move up to the parent can come in handy. Although, I personally do a lot of keyboard maneuvering with type-ahead-filtering in more crowded folders. It’s often just a quick succession of typing the first 2 or three letters and hitting ENTER. Or ALT+CursorUp to go back to the parent.

I’m aware that it’s been decades of conditioning my usage…

Well, yeah… I fumbled my tests a little bit and I can confirm that, yeah, the whole folder hierarchy is shown, I was a bit too hasty in writing about that
In that situation the dialog itself works ok.

This, however, is not happening, the extra partition is shown in the Desktop but I cannot access it in any way in that window, it doesn’t show in the dropdown menu nor in the Desktop folder.

But yes, if I enable the “Disks” icon it will be shown in the dialog.

Type-ahead filtering is great. I just tried Alt+Up and even using that the dialog never gets to “root”, it seems to cycle between the choices that are possible in the dialog and nothing else and eventually will only switch between Desktop, Home and Boot.

Weird. Showing on Desktop or in a “Disks folder”, I see the hierarchy in the pop-up and can move right to the root disk with ALT+up…
Maybe a nightly regression? I’m on Beta5.

I’ve created ticket #19547, File panels don’t show mounted disks on Desktop anymore, for the main issue.

yepp, I experienced this also … it happened to stopped working at about February or begining of March – until then it worked in Nightly reliably.
I had a special USB thumbdrive and a data/media partition mounted, so on the Desktop, however recently I just could select and reach their space in the file dialog when I set target for dwnloading, if a subfolder linked onto desktop.
