I know, Haiku has social media stuff like the forum, Twitter, and others but youtube? i only found one claiming to be official, ~20 years old, with 2 videos 152 subs (https://www.youtube.com/@haikuos). why Youtube isnt a priority? because this is the kind of thing that all new manpower for development can come from, more userbase, and other stuff also from youtube. i just want to know if there are any plans for it. thanks for attention.
This project is made primarily by developers, not marketing people.
Creating videos takes a lot of time and work that many people (myself included) prefer to spend on writing code or helping people on the forum instead.
There are some people publishing videos about Haiku on their personal account.
I don’t see why that needs to be “official” by a project that’s about development.
I dont think official YT channel is a bad dea. And if most of the community is about tech, it doesent mean there are someone that cant edit videos. Someone official in the community (like a core contributor) can ask for some videos and publish them, developer didnt wasted and those who cant code spent their time productively.
Well, people come and go. Whoever set up that channel is probably no longer involved.
I’m one of the people doing their own thing. And yes, It really is a LOT of work. But if you make it official, that gets much worse. On my own, private channel I can do and say what I like. But if it was the official Haiku channel, everything would have to be vetted for liability. If Michel, the private individual, makes a video that says “Windows is %$%^YTFY%$^^$”, well, so what? Put that statement on an official channel and watch the lawsuits come rolling in.
I’d rather see more people do their own thing on their own channels and perhaps a loose agreement to cross-reference between them.
If you’re up to the task gabriel12 go for it. I think its a good idea and useful. I can help too. It doesn’t have to be “official” just good and dedicated to Haiku. Call it “HaiTube -The Haiku Channel” and forward any revenue generated to the project.
Im not that good at video editing but i can try, do i post on my personal yt?
If you’re creating videos, maybe also put a copy of them on some other platforms.
For example Peertube,a decentralized open-source video platform: https://joinpeertube.org
Or on https://vidlii.com ,a video site with a oldschool design that matches Haiku pretty good and is lightweight so that it works fine on older devices, too.
Or on https://odysee.com ,a platform that many people fed up with Big Tech companies like Google/Youtube seem to like.
I’m personally not really a fan of videos,I prefer reading very much, but if they also appear somewhere else so that I don’t have to open a Big Tech platform,I think I’d watch them.
Peertube is still contentious, especially in germany, if they keep their automatic webtorrent (or equivalent) support enabled per default to send video to random people.
The P2P functionality distributes only the video you’re currently watching to other people to save server bandwidth.
As long as you’re not watching something illegal, you should be fine.
I don’t see any problem here, quite the opposite,it makes efficient use of available bandwidth so that instance owners that host popular content don’t need to buy/rent hundreds of servers.
Anyway, there are also instances where P2P is disabled and you always stream the content directly from the server.
Exactly. If the content was Illegal you would not commit a crime by downloading it without that knowledge. But you are if you upload it, even if you did not know the content was illegal.
So, great, I’ll just send you a link to something and then you commit a crime. I see nothing wrong in this picture.
What about paying for server bandwidth instead of harvesting it from users without permission? what a wierd thought. The “instance owner” clearly isn’t hosting in this instance, they are just using your connection without your permission. The vague “watching this might expose your IP” is clearly not enough here, even if you wanted to do this on-the-board.
