There aren’t any that approach the ease-of-use that Finale has, which is what I use under Windows. Quite a while ago there was a program called Mozart which was headed in that direction, but it was in very early development and was abandoned shortly thereafter. There are sequencing apps out there (like Sequitur, IIRC) which also offer notation in addition to the piano roll style method, but they seem to me more like an afterthought.
Funnily enough, one of the better “notation” programs I’ve used is Guitar Pro, under Windows. Mostly I like it for the speed of input. If you’ever written tablature, that’s what it is. Version 4 (IIRC) has a notation display, but you still use tab to enter it. Numpad and arrow keys. Speedy!
Maybe I didn’t use it enough, but Finale was way too much mousing for me.
I wonder if Lilypond will compile in BeOS. It’s a command-line music notation language (something like Latex), and it produces the best music notation I’ve ever seen.
..... it produces the best music notation I've ever seen.
It does, it is powerful, but it is not user(musician) friendly, no realtime screen display like other apps do (apps on Win & Mac), no midi input/playback, etc… :x :x
