I may do a new print run of Haiku DVDs for the beta 6 release.
In order to not be left with 500+ DVDs that no one wants, I will do pre-order this time. Please fill in the poll if you’re interested.
The price should be around 5€ including shipping (the DVD itself is around 1 to 2 €, the shipping is more than 3 even as standard international letter).
If there is enough demand I can order 300 DVDs, in which case these will be “real” pressed DVDs. Under 300, the manufacturer will not do that, so it would be DVD-Rs with a limited lifespan. In case there is not enough interest, I will probably not bother with ordering DVD-Rs.
The packaging is a simple cardboard sleeve. I could do more fancy things, but it increases the price and the storage space for me. So in that case it would probably be a bit higher price (7 to 10€, depending on order quantity).
Are the “fancy” versions just plastic boxes? Personally I find those way more ugly and frequently throw them away. But I do like the sleeve the beta1 version came in. (Apart from the Pointless plastic wrapper)
Assuming the Sleeve version is available, would you also accept pre-orders for a bigger ammount so I have some to give away?
Another though; seeing as 4.7GB is quite a lot of space, can we preload the DVD with additional usefull software, or maybe the entire sourcecode of Haiku (with dev tools) to play around with?
The fancy version is what that industry call DigiPak casing: a cardboard-based packaging style that folds out like a book, with a plastic tray glued inside to hold the disc.
Only the black tray part in example above is in plastic, the rest is cardboard.
If you want more han one, just tell me how many you need in a comment. I will then estimate the total (I also made a poll on Mastodon where I’ll get a few more people interested, so I have some math to do anyway :D). I will print some extra for FOSDEM and the like too.
It looks like people prefer the “Digipack” version. As Philippe explained, it’s cardboard as well, unfolding and with a plastic support for the disc inside (which can be black or transparent, with things printed under it on the cardboard).
The shrinkwrap is useful to protect the sleeve and dvd during shipping and my handling. So everyone receives a nice new untouched package, the dvd doesn’t slide out of the sleeve, etc. So I’ll keep it. You can remove it if you don’t like it, after all
I will use the official beta 6 image. It’s too late to add anything to it now.
I dunno for others, but clearly I’m interested for collection and memory purpose, I don’t plan to actually use it to load or install from it, I use USB keys usually for that.
Hence why I’m more interested by a fancier version.
I’ll see exact details once I have an idea how much disks I need to order. We’re close to a hundred already if counting votes on the forum and on Mastodon so I think it’s going to happen.
The way I did it last time, people paid me directly and then I sent any extra money to Haiku inc. Ideally it would be the opposite: people send the money directly to Haiku inc, and Haiku inc refunds me for the production and shipping costs. I guess I’ll get in touch with them to do this the proper way then.
The previous one was 32 bit.
If I do 64bit I would try to change some details on the packaging to use different colors. I think 32bit is blue (like Intel), 64 bit could be green (like AMD), PowerPC could be red, RISC-V could be purple or orange, and ARM and m68k, I’m not sure but there are no images for these at the moment anyway.
Color for ARM could be titanium gray like the well established color of the macs (or even Surface X).
I don’t think 64bits should use a different color..it’s just the instruction set variant, while ARM, x86, RISC-V, PowerPC ports are in fact not just the CPU but also the support of hardware architecture of some specific range of platforms using these family of CPU (pc intel, macs, powermac, etc).
But maybe i says that because green is my less appreciate color
Which means that the easiest path is just to keep the same artwork, just add x86 32bits or 64bits somewhere
Another solution is to propose by default x86 32bits as in previous disc, but check by poll if enough people would be interested by a version with both 32bits and 64bits, so dual discs tray, with obviously an increase price…
In case the nicer one is used (as it looks like), maybe include both 32bit and 64bit in there then?
People could check older HW with 32bit and more recent HW with 64bit which probably lead to a better experience? (one could check which arch get’s the most downloads on the server/torrent)?
I don’t even have a DVD player anymore in this laptop. Having one for the shelf, next to the BeOS one!
