Libxml2 requirements for software update

Hi there. I tried to run software update today but i’m seeing dozens of entries for]

package xxxx requires lib:libxml2 > some version 2.xxx but none of the providers can be installed.

I’ve seen this error several times in the past and usually just removed the package that requires the non available library.. (one of the many webkit browsers I had installed needed to go last week)…

But this time I have actually dozens of packages requiring libxml2 and asking to be uninstalled or ignored.

It’s the first time I’ve seen so many dependency failures in a software update.

Currently using master repositories (nightly) last update was about a week ago.

Any advice welcomed.

As far as I know there has been a switch in libxml2 versions on HaikuPorts that has happened recently, requiring a number of packages that depend on that library to be fixed as well. It’s in the process of being resolved.

I would avoid

pkgman full-sync

until the Haiku Beta5 → Beta6 transition had not finished. With Softwareupdater you cannot do that.
If you don’t mind the command line terminal, then
pkgman update
will be safe.
I haven’t experienced any conflicts between packages here (nor I have now).
It doesn’t try to sync strictly what’s on your machine with what’s in the repo(s).

And of course, you can interrupt it – with writing ‘no’ at prompt when asked + [ENTER] --, if anything does not match with your desired state of softwares.

Things will be shaky as we prepare for the upcoming beta 6 release for the next month or so. Usually at that time we do several major library updates (ffmpeg and possibly openssl will also receive updates, I think).

You can try again in a few days, after most packages have been rebuilt.

that makes sense… since my system stability is excellent right now, I will avoid doing any updates until the repositories settle down.

Will this fix the “no provider for libxml2” error, do you think?

I can’t even install anything because everything seems to need libxml2

We are rebuilding all packages that oepend on libxml2 to use the new version at the moment. This may take a few days, as some of them have not been touched in a while and are not compiling for other reasons as well.

I do not have such conflicts if I just simply update from Haikuports – as I offered above (no full-sync

I did the update from Haiku repo separately - now Haikuports disabled for my Nightly. Especially as for Haikuports no different branch defined, like for Haiku repo. That would trigger bigger storage costs for Haiku Inc. It is important only in these beta transition phases only, as otherwise new package levels, and additional requirements in the recipes are less spreaded out, but switched more smoothly - in the background. Now more packages related as more packages updated - due to the closing Beta6 release.

It depends what software you have installed. Not everything uses libxml2!

Thanks, I see, this way I’m just fortunate I’m on Haiku x86_64, so many packages not relates, and what yes, there I have a newer version installed.

And I thought Softwareupdater might use full-sync - as that once contained many packages earlier, that were in one of resolving scenarios of conflicting packages, so it would have uninstalled on that selection

Already mentioned somewhere that gpgme and friends had a make-over, upstream has split the packages, option 2 should get you on par with the new requirements there.

Well, I started to follow option 2 through full-sync type of update, it started to felt overwhelming as again and again a new conflict came up - so, finally I interrupted …

I may complete later - I hoped in shorter process, as seemed the separated 1 deinstallations were not collected, meanwhile above to keep seamed to me to enlist the same packages - I not checked, so possibly I just felt boring to do and that way seemed so.

You know that you’re not obligated to try and update your system every so often, right?

Besides that libgpgme, the rest of the problems in your list are already know, and being worked on as we’re able. Why not wait till you see the list of known libxml2 related issues get resolved before trying to update?

More post about the same stuff is just noise, IMO.

I terribly sorry, but based on Begasus’s post I thought it means I can attempt a sync - as I interpreted so, selecting the option 2 at all conflicts are leading to a safe sync with the repo now.
Nexyt time I rather keep the attempt and the result only for me, as otherwise I did.

As of today, I was able to upgrade without any errors.

There were over 90 updates stacked. Felt like I was updating SUSE Tumbleweed. lol.

Sadly it seems to have broken ACPI compatibility on my Gigabyte MB / 4790K (double fault) and drops to KDL after the third boot icon lights up, so I had to disable ACPI in /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/kernel file by removing the # from the acpi line, but that’s a different issue.

Please open a ticket about the ACPI problem, with a screenshot. We can’t fix bugs if we don’t know about them!

I was using hrev59917 and I just did an update and reenabled ACPI and rebooted with the newly updated hrev59919 expecting to have to send a log dump.

But it appears to be fixed already… Amazing.
