Last week I successfully installed Haiku on a Samsung N150+ netbook with an Intel Atom CPU and 2GB RAM. I bought the netbook on eBay as a precursor to maybe building a pocket cyberdeck. “Can I do all my comms and journalling on a teeny computer?” felt like a good question to answer before I start sinking time and money into a cyberdeck hobby.
I’d already been through every Linux distro I felt comfy in for this netbook, and most were far too taxing for the poor old machine. Arch with no display manager and just AwesomeWM came closest, but still rather slow at anything but a terminal.
And then in searching for Unix flavours that still support 32-bit, I learned about Haiku. Downloaded and installed it within 10 minutes. Took longer to etch the install media than to install the OS. Completely blew my mind. I’ve never tried anything not Linux before. I frickn love it! And so does the Samsung N150+… mostly ![]()
The main issue is that Haiku couldn’t see my ethernet or wifi cards, but don’t worry, I will come back and ask about that properly when I’ve got time to lay it out clearly enough. (yes, I did find the wifi workshop help article and tried the proprietary drivers install script)
Anyhoo, I decided that Haiku is so beautiful that I’m in this for the long haul, so here I am, thanks for letting me join, and I’ll see y’all around soon ![]()
What an amazing OS and community! Y’all look beautiful to a newcomer ![]()
