We can still talk about it. Thn you make your own decision wether you care or not and wether you want to put your money into it or not (by buying their hardware).
So, just to be clear: Framework has decided to support some linux distros and projects, but they chose to support Omarchy, which is a preconfigured Arch Linux made by DHH, the author of Ruby On Rails. There are two problems with that choice: DHH has some, let’s say, controversial political views, there is some ongoing drama in the Ruby on Rails community about it. But also, this isn’t really the kind of Linux distribution that needs funding and contributes a lot to the infrastructure and ecosystem. It’s just a personal project, with a bit of theming, non-free software preinstalled, and some hacker aesthetics theming. So why did they decide to support that one, of all distros they could pick from?
So, personally, you make what you want of that. Maybe you don’t care and you continue to buy Framework products. Maybe you care and won’t ever buy from them again. At the Haiku level, however, it’s a good thing that we know about it and decide if we want to advertise our compatibility with Framework machines (eg. on social media posts), if we should focus on these machines rather than others, or if we rather stay away from them (either by strong disagreement with what they’re doing, or just to stay away from the drama).
It seems to be getting a lot of attention on YouTube, and racing up the Distrowatch rankings. Just the sort of “Next Big Thing” a hardware manufacturer likes to be associated with. Framework will happily sell you a system with Windows pre-installed, so this is about publicity, not technical or ideological reasons. And “There is no such thing as bad publicity“ (attributed to PT Barnum).
Just how recursive does this have to be?
If you dislike this DHH and decide to boycott everything they make, fine. And then accept that someone else may decide to boycott you for your views. We all have views. It is very unlikely I will be allowed into the USA for the next three years .
Boycott a company who threw some money in the direction of those projects? Perhaps. For a year or two, until you feel they have learned their lesson. Or until they have grovelled sufficiently, whichever comes first.
But should we then track down the company’s landlord and parts suppliers, and boycott those? Where does it end?
But to get at least slightly back on-topic: I can see there is a market for upgradeable and customizable laptops, although in my experience any of those port modules that are not currently in the laptop will disappear into the black hole that is my old e-waste drawer, never to be seen again. There are power supplies in there that I have no idea what they ever powered. It remains to be seen how long Framework will actually keep bringing out upgraded bits and pieces for older models. Will there be a motherboard upgrade for the Framework 12 in ten years? Twenty?
It would be good to know if Haiku could run on Framework machines. They don’t ship here (They will take orders from the hellhole warzone of South Sudan, but not from South Africa) but if they did, I might consider buying one, then probably decide on something cheaper.
I don’t follow him actively, so the last drama I remembered was the Basecamp employee exodus a few years ago. Intrigued by your comment, I went to check it out. What can I say? I was ready for controversial political views, but I was not ready for blatant racism.
Framework really dropped the ball there, unfortunatly.
First, DHH and Omarchy don’t need sponsoring, second, this is not about a bit strange political views, DHH is clearly racist. I think framwork wanted to sponsor something hip and new and did not do enough checking. In the momentary political climate, especially in the states, openly rejecting this is also very hard to do. As long as framework does not repeat this, i personally am willing to let it slide.
PS
I had no prior knowledge of DHHs views myself before this unfortunate event.
When people pointed it out to them, they doubled down in a forum post, saying that they want to build a “big tent” community (that’s their word), where everyone is welcome (read: racists are welcome too).
For me, that’s enough to never want to give them any money or support, unless they change that policy…
Considering the challenges caused by mass immigration on some countries, is understandable (although controversial) that some people have strong opinions on that.
Anyways, for the sake of consistency, I would assume that Haiku project is going to follow the same approach on other topics and, for example, discuss if the project should stop accepting money from Google. After all, Google is taking active actions to harm the internet, abusing their dominant market position and causing more damage than an small company that have almost zero market share.
I think there’s a difference between taking money from someone and publicly sponsoring someone.
First of all,I fully agree that Google is one of the most awful and evil companies in the world.
I’d totally vote against taking their money if we had to place a big ugly Google logo on the Haiku homepage,or if the money gave them any power in Haikus internal decision-making.
But that’s not the case.
We can just take their money for free,so we have more resources building an awesome open-source operating system that benefits everyone, and they have a bit less money to spend on their evil businesses.
It would be nice, however,if people stopped permanently putting links to that awful Google-owned advertising wall masked as a video platform.
And maybe some day we can reach a consensus that it’s not the greatest idea to depend on our direct competitor, that is also a very evil company (M$),to host our ports repository.
Well,one can still dream,no?
There is a huge difference between having a strong opinion on immigration, and dividing citizens of a country, who were born and raised there, by their color of skin (according to DHH, even if you were born in the UK and have the UK passport, you only count as native Brit if you’re white, and it doesn’t matter if your ancestors have lived in the UK for the last 200 years, if you’re not white, you are not Brit).
DHH is really abhorrent, that is pure NS-Ideology, you cannot even define “white”, are Fiins “white”, are italians? Austrians? This is all so stupid and so dangerous, i thought we had learned …
