I’ll see if I can try my MDD G4 and my G5 in the next few days.
First time posting here — thanks so much for the work on Tabby, it’s great to see PPC getting this kind of attention. Wanted to share a test report in case it’s useful.
Tested on a PowerBook G4 12" (PowerBook6,2, BootROM 4.7.5f1), Tabby hrev59853+146+dirty.
USB-booted the installer fine (needed probe-all before OF would see the stick, and a single backslash in the boot path rather than \\). Install to internal HDD completed cleanly, 347/347 packages.
Booting from the installed HDD panics 100% of the time, right at “Mounting boot disk” — reproduced twice with the identical object address and identical stack trace, so this looks fully deterministic rather than a racy heap issue:
Panic trace (ASSERT FAILED, Slab.cpp:1340)

Also saw a one-off panic during the post-install restart (page fault touching 0x0000001c in the “shutdown worker” thread) — only happened once, didn’t chase it since the HDD-boot panic above blocked further testing anyway.
Restart panic (single occurrence)

Happy to test more if it’d help narrow this down.
This report is extremely useful, thank you!
I had only a panic while “mounting Bootdisk” when I did boot in my 15" PowerBook G4 from usb0
On my PowerBook G4 the boot seem only to work e.g. starting to Desktop from usb1 ![]()
I tried it on my A1046 G4 PowerBook5,2 (sic) with no luck — it dumps into KDL while trying to mount the root filesystem; screenshot below. The good news is that it behaves identically booting from either USB or CD (I was too chicken to try it on the real hard drive).
At long last, i can finally have some haiku fun with all the powerpc mac towers and laptops i have stacked around the place, neat.
thanks for this!!
I have exactly this error at this point when I do boot the image via USB Stick in USB0.
But when I use the other USB port (usb1) in my PB G4 15" then the PB does mount the Boot Disk.
Try the other USB Port:
boot usb1/disk@1:,\haikuloadder.elf
But mine is missing the Trackpad-Support and has a ATI Radeon 9700 not a Nvidia 5200 like the 12" models which get a real GFX driver in tabby
Is there any chance this will ever be implemented for G5s? They are a lot faster than their 32-bit counterparts. When I booted it on my iMac G5 iSight, it just kept mapping memory in OF with no stop, so something is wrong there for sure.
I do plan on getting this working on G5
To follow on from someone’s wallpaper project, I had some fun coming up with a loose logo concept for TabbyOS as well. Tabby cat stripes aren’t as “rectangular” as this but it was a five minute concept knock-up in Inkscape. The inspirations should be obvious.
Thought it would be a fun idea for a sticker logo. All copyright/trademark/etc is hereby assigned to whoever is behind TabbyOS.
(I’m not expecting this to replace the black pawprint. Just a bit of fun in between more productive tasks.)
Can you also try to port the arctic fox browser for ppc ?
the Flower Power units will be back ! ![]()
Would like to know how well it runs on that thing. Like how’s the performance? Also I see Sauerbraten installed, how well does that run? Also, how’s the G5 progress going?
Is there a newer USB installer image available?
Also, I would ultimately like to set it up to build locally if possible. Do you have instructions? Are you cross compiling from Linux or some other OS?
Tabby-powered. Love it.
Power Mac G5 seals the deal for me! ![]()
Thought this image was more PowerMac-ish…
