Traditionally, Thanksgiving has been a celebration of the blessings of the year, including the harvest. On Thanksgiving Day, it is common for Americans to share a family meal, attend church services, and view special sporting events.

It originated as an American holiday. For most Americans, we praise God for the blessings during the year and thank Him for His love and grace we experience as a family, as a people, and as a nation. In the times when America was more agrarian than today, it also marked a celebration for the autumn harvests that represented the hard work done throughout the year and the bountiful rewards from that work, which the Lord has blessed.
I believe six other nations also commemorate a Thanksgiving Day from different traditions.
