OMG! I just discovered that it’s easy to toggle the display language for the online User Guide to non-English languages. To think I’d been replacing the “en” in the URL with “jp” when I wanted to read the Japanese User Guide until today…
I think that it might help lower the bar for non-English speaking Haiku users if the language toggle of the User Guide could be made more easily discoverable (if there are non-English language pages available for the main Haiku website, that could do with more discoverability too. I mean, installing a Japanse Input Method was much easier than doing that on FreeBSD or Linux (definitely one of Haiku’s Unique Selling Points for international users!). Providing a bit more discoverability to non-English Haiku resources might be a pretty good thing?)
Well, if you’re using the guide on Haiku, the script should select the language according to your locale settings.
Anyway, you know that you don’t have to mess with address bar and you have a language selector right under Haiku logo, right ?
Hmm… I have my locale set to Japanese but the Haiku website and User Guide displays in English. This is so in WebPositive and in iceWeasle. When I click on the User Guide icon from the Desktop, the offline User Guide in English comes up.
Anyway, I’m saying that the language selector is not visible enough for the less observant person. Like myself. My fault of course.
No, it really isn’t your fault. The control Is really horrible from a UI perspective. I’ve seen this severall times with other people too.
My Grandmother was unable to change the language because the picker wasn’t obvious, and even then in the expanded mode it is really hard to use.
This should be a normal combobox with normal OS colors and controls, then it would work fine imo.
I’ve just not got around to changing that ![]()
It does. Unfortunately, I see we distribute the Japanese version under the country code (jp), not the language one (ja).
@chaplintokyo: the general improvement for everybody aside, you can always bookmark or link to your preferred version and avoid editing the URL or selecting the language each time.
