Haiku to mentor interns in Google Summer of Code 2026 | Haiku Project

Haiku is proud to once again be part of the Google Summer of Code. Over the summer, new contributors will work on improving Haiku and related applications, with help from our mentor team. Google gives the participants a stipend, which allows them to work full-time on the project without the need to find another job.

I wonder how Google will manage students who uses AI during their GSoC ? I think this program will end sooner rather than later because of this.

Google doesn’t manage that. They told us to write our policy about AI and LLMs in our ideas page, which we did. I don’t see why that would lead to the end of the program, it is no different from other existing rules like “don’t copypaste code from Linux because the license is incompatiple”, “follow the coding style”, “communicate regularly with your mentor”, etc. Why would this one be different?

The GSoC participants are legally considered contractors, and as such, if they don’t do what is said in the contract, they don’t get paid.

That’s a really good news that Haiku was selected. After last year, I was a bit afraid that AI would get the focus again. The number of students still interested in developing Haiku further is another one.

I don’t know if it’s good or bad news, but so far it looks like we have more potential GSoC participants interested in Haiku than we have mentors. We will have to find a few extra mentors if all of them turn in a good proposal!
