Good day,
Got this 2nd hand Thinkpad P14s Gen1 several weeks ago with the following hardware:
- Ryzen 7 4750u
- 40 GB RAM (8GB soldered, 32GB sodimm)
- 512 GB SK Hynix NVMe disk
- 14 inch 1920x1080 matte display
- English ANSI keyboard
- Wifi and Wired network
And had also some extras I didn’t know until it arrived: - fingerprint reader
- SD card reader
- SIM card slot
I removed the windows 11 install that came with the laptop, check BIOS was set to UEFI only and then installed Haiku Beta 5 from an USB stick on UEFI mode. Everything went fine through the install process and got Haiku Beta 5 booting in UEFI mode.
First things I always do on any Haiku install:
1- remove virtual memory
2- deactivate sshd
- Video: Framebuffer only at display’s native resolution. Expected as is an AMD Integrated Graphics device.
- Network: no network interface works. Nor wired, no wifi. Wifi is iaxwifi200 (already reported bug and firmware fails to load). Wired is Realtek, and never gets a link. So ended up buying an USB/Wifi adapter that allows me to get online.
Moved from beta to nightly to see if there was any difference in the Wifi/Wired behavior but everything stayed the same. (Wired hasn’t been reported yet) - Trackpad/Trackpoint: well, these two work and don’t work. Trackpad, if is going to work, it would only happen when plugged to the power supply. Never works on battery. Trackpoint usally works on battery and plugged, though chances are not 100%.
- Battery: as this is a 2nd hand laptop, I knew the battery would be a bit worn out (the seller only guarantees around 2 hours battery life). Actually on Haiku I get about those 2 hours, no more. Battery indicator has its own life and behaves independently of battery load. Even with indicator at 0% I still got more than half an hour battery life. While on battery, the indicator can jump back and forth, rise and lower the battery level randomly, so I never know how much juice is still there left to be used.
Battery also drains when powered off. Looks like this is an issue that happens on these laptops. - Didn’t try: SIM, SD card, Fingerprint reader.
Well, other than those issues, the laptop is quite ok. The outside looks almost new, the insides move Haiku quite well. It’s a bit of a disappointment the network and trackpad/trackpoint thing.
For this laptop, a mouse and an USB/Wifi adapter is a must. Not the best suited laptop for those without patience.
Regards,
RR
