As an old BeOS user looking here after many years I experienced a lot of unnecessarily
difficulties that could easily be fixed by a few additions on the Haiku web page.
First of all I don’t see any planning for future releases and when it might be expected that
Haiku is suitable for everyday use.
Second I don’t see a link to software for Haiku, of course that should be on the home page!
After a while searching the internet I found “http://haikuware.com/”
I tried to install a few drivers and programs and found out nothing I tried worked!!
I have no words for that! After downloading some programs with the by default installed
web browser, I got two files for most downloads, one ended with .zip and one ending with
-0zip or something???
Sometimes after unpacking there was a new folder named “common” but I didn’t notice
that, in that folder sometimes there was a little info but never complete so that I was able
to install a program and run it.
Firefox didn’t do anything until I remembered ( from the BeOS time ) I had to move all .so
files to somewhere…
I tried a few thing and managed to get it started but this is not the way anyone want to waste time to just install a program.
I did not yet find any info on how and where I should install anything.
So I would suggest, make a link to where haiku software can be found and include some information on HOW to install anything with each program.
Divide that programs that actually work under Haiku and the ones that you don’t know if
it works. Remove the ones that don’t work!
It will save us an lot of time and frustration, I really hope Haiku grows to be an useful OS
with all the ease of use and speed we are used from BeOS.
