Haiku Activity & Contract Report, August 2026 | Haiku Project

This report covers hrev59922 through hrev60059.

The main news, of course, is that R1/beta6 was released last month. You can read the announcement for more details. Many of the changes in this report made it into R1/beta6 (but not all of them.)

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.haiku-os.org/blog/waddlesplash/2026-09-10-haiku_activity_contract_report_august_2026/

They also added support for “secureplt”-style PPC binaries, which are much more like regular binaries from other ELF architectures than the older type of PPC binaries.

So Haiku PPC would use ELF right, instead of the PEF format that BeOS used on PPC? I also know in Linux & PPC there’s ELFv1 and ELFv2 that I don’t really understand, but would that be something also present in Haiku?

Thanks for the thorough report, I followed many patches on CGIT, but there are some does not write notes to the new code, but only a title only : ))
Of course, this way those patches will be better understandable only from this report

Thank you for everyone for their hard work on fixing improving Haiku versions - those also which ones still not supported officially and still getting fixes/improvements to their code against that. Their arrival is awaited by several groups with already being owned some appropriate hardware for it ;- { ) )

There are currently no plans for compatibility with BeOS PowerPC applications (that would probably require building code with MetroWerks CodeWarrior or building a compiler that’s ABI compatible with it).

So, yes, ELF, and I think a single version of it, since we don’t have to provide compatibility with old tools and ways of doing things.

Of course, I never thought compatibility with BeOS on PPC was on the table. I was just wondering about file formats. Thanks for the clarification!
