Most of the donation money is spent on the contract that allows waddlesplash to work on Haiku in full-time.
Setting a higher donation goal (and reaching it) allows him to work more hours and get more stuff done without touching Haikus reserve money.
You can see more details about the donation in the financial report: https://www.haiku-inc.org/docs/haiku_inc-financial-report-2024.pdf

We increased the number when the previous goal was hit.

Basically the goal is “same as last year”. Last year the goal was 20000, it was exceeded, and the goal was extended to 30000. Maybe the same will happen this year. At the moment we are mostly on track to reach 30000, but there could be a surge of donations in december (chrismas season, or maybe taxes deduction season, depending on how you want to see it).

Yes, more developers are needed, but with such a small budget, there’s no way we could hire someone on the market at a reasonable pay rate. And, setting a very high and unrealistic donation target would probably not go so well.

So the idea is rather to grow slowly, secure the one paid contract we already have, and then see if we can hire someone else in the existing developer base.
