I would like to donate a bit Money to the Project but have no Credit Card and Paypal etc. are no Options for me. So I would ask if there is a Way to donate some Money via Bank Transfer or the like
Liberapay accepts SEPA transfer.
Yes, for such a Thing I was looking for Thank you
Oh no, it seems that I can’t use SEPA via Liberapay because Haiku.inc is not located in a SEPA-Country
Hm,someone should update the Haiku Inc. website then because it states that SEPA works there: Please make a tax-deductible gift today. - Haiku, Inc.
I personally use Liberapay with a credit card so I didn’t notice.
Maybe donating to the Haiku team on Liberapay instead works with SEPA,as that one prefers Euro donations:
As far as I understand it,donations to that team don’t go directly to Haiku Inc. but to the people listed on the site (with Haiku Inc. being only one of them),but they’re important developers of the project,so the money goes into the right direction anyway.
Edit: Seems the biggest part of the money does go to Haiku Inc. when donating to the team also, see https://liberapay.com/Haiku/income/
Donating to the Haiku Team via Liberapy and SEPA seems also not to work for me. Maybe I do something wrong But I will ask at the Mailing List for Wire Transfer. And thank you for the Help
No, you did nothing wrong, i tried it too:
Direct Debit
Only for donations to SEPA countries
@leavengood Can you shed some light on this?
edit: or @axeld , @jessicah @kallisti5
Haiku Inc ban account is in the US. This means it does not have an IBAN, the international way to identify a bank account, because the US decided to not use that standard. As a result, Haiku Inc cannot receive SEPA payments.
Libera Pay does not see the money when you make a donation. Essentially hey just allow you to find the Paypal or Stripe account of the person or organization you’re making a donation to. Depending on that account, some of the payment options are or are not available.
So I guess that’s why there was a bit of a misunderstanding. Liberapay allows SEPA transfers, but only if the receiver (Haiku in this case) can accept them on their own bank account.
Liberapay donation pages states this very clearly if you try to donate to Haiku: bank transfers are only available for donations to organizations and people inside SEPA countries. Haiku is outside of SEPA, so, that is not an option. And the info on haiku-inc about this is not correct. I’m not sure if it refers to an older way Libera Pay used to work, or if it’s just an error by misunderstanding hwo it currently works.
In the end, if you don’t have neither a credit card or PayPal, this leaves you with few options:
- Bitcoins (that will be locked in Haiku inc counbase account they can’t currently use)
- Wire transfers and cheques (with the rather high fees of the US banking system, so reserved only for large donations)
- In cash at our booth at various open source events (we are usually at FOSDEM, Capitole du Libre, and sometimes JDLL around where I live, not sure about other areas in the world).
Are there some practical solutions for europeans to donate money them? I don’t have a credit card either. And paypal also doesn’t seem like a great optiön…
I just listed the other solutions. You make your own conclusions on what is practical or not.
Bank cards (credit or debit) are extremely common where I am, and can be used either through Libera Pay or Github Sponsors. This is the normal way to handle payments online and also in the real world here, so I find it surprising that so many people do not have a bank card.
But each country is a bit different I guess?
What about via HSA (former BeGesitert) ?
Officially, it’s to support HSA costs related to events they organized to support, in turns, Haiku. But maybe a way to donate money to them so they reverse it to Haiku Inc. instead is possible?
Or via some european dev bank account, a dev part of Haiku devs team, as a relay?
It both case, it’s then a question of thrust and, potentially, who support the extra Visa/Mastercard/Paypal/whatever fee to donate in turns to Haiku Inc.
I agree, the most pratical way is just to use a bank card supporting international paiements.
I’m not sure what you mean? I order something, then i get the invoice, which lists the IBAN and the purpose of the transaction… Then I pay that. Why would I use a credit card when I don’t want to have a credit? Banks here charge 10€ per month for a pre-paid credit card that has almost no use. It just doesn’t make any economical sense to get one. I’m not going to pay that money just to be able to send money to a US based org.
There are free credit cards from several vendors in Germany and most likely also other countries, for example the Payback American Express which I have.
But yes,I absolutely agree that donating to Haiku shouldn’t require anyone to get a credit card and offering a way with SEPA would be easier.
SEPA transaction is also my primary way to pay stuff I buy online (since many shops don’t accept Amex) and the one almost everyone in Germany accepts.
As a workaround and if you trust me,one could send a SEPA transfer to the account specified on my website with the comment “Please forward to Haiku” and I’d add that amount to my monthly Liberapay donation, but I feel like there should be a more official way to do that, and also note that there’s a limit how much a individual person is allowed to donate to a specific project each month on Liberapay.
SEPA for buying online is almost specifically a German quirk; but an EU account would make a lot of sense for donations.
If there was a corporate donation (without setting off arguments about that again!) from a European based body they would likely need a way to make a SEPA payment too.
If I understand properly there is a minimum Amount when one donates via Wire Transfer. If so, can you tell what is the minimum AmountÂż
According to Please make a tax-deductible gift today. - Haiku, Inc.
Wire Transfers
If you would like to make a wire transfer directly to our US bank account, please contact us. There is however a $12 fee for accepting incoming wire tranfers. Resultingly, the fee only work in our favor for sums greater than $500 USD.
Thank you. So, at Monday I will go to my Bank and say them “Give me Credit Card functionality for my Debit Card because I have to donate some Money to Haiku.inc!” If they wont do that, for whatever Reason, I will contact Haiku.inc for Wire Transfers.
