Design Ideas

I tink the crucial issue is to have subcategories under Applications, which would work in any layout. We already have subcategories in HaikuDepot, no need to invent new ones. It’s just a case of moving the symlink. A bit of work, but it only has to be done once.

Another one, more in line with the current style. Yes categories is a must have under applications. The general idea of the mockup is to bypass the blueleaf menu by «extracting what’s inside and putting it front and center. The query, Haiku superpower should be immediatly accessible from the deskbar also. The bottom part works quite well already in my opinion displaying the currently launched apps.

It’s done in Inkscape and the font is the defaut one.

This look reminds me more of tablet operation or CNC machine operation; I like the current Haiku icons much better. i.e. operation of simple touch screens.

but beauty is always in the eye of the beholder

they are just mockups, the icons are basic and not meant to be the actual icons for the os they are there for visual representation.

I wasn’t exactly going for a “flat” look I would say minimalist and clean.
the taskbar isn’t even finished.
The point of the thread is just to throw out ideas for how Haiku could look in the future, everyone has a style they like, I always believed having choice and themes would be available in the future.

The whole Desktbar on top is just wasted space! (On blioberis mock-up!)
What is it good for if you only need your tabbed app-tabs on top?
That’s window style and I don’t like it at all!

For me all apps should remember its last position and tab-position only to make me happy!

It is not only me… but who knows and who cares!

Even if those mockups are not up to my taste (call me old-fashion), it’s not bad others have another view of it, getting anything done (and approved/changed) is another thing, long live freedom!

Im slowly getting into Haiku under the hood, … maybe I will look at it  It wont be hard for first commit

I may be sick on eyes, but what gradient do you use for menus and bar?

A suprise to be sure but a wellcome one

No you’re right there is a gradient. I picked the defaut menubar gradient : eeeeeeff to dcdcdcff.

I quite like the defaut top right deskbar as well, it’s very distinctive and unique to Haiku. And you get so much space on the screen. The option to move it around suits every taste as it is. My main point with these mockups is to address certain usability issues of the deskbar, after a thorough survey of, well, my usage. I realised that I don’t use it to launch apps (list to long and not organised = quicklaunch instead), I regularly forget that I can use the query (tiny «find…» in the menu), I’d like to be able to access my recents documents and folders directly from the main menu and pin some favorites too. And I think the deskbar preferences should be under the preferences entry. Sadly I lack the coding skills to make it happen so it certainly will stay the same but who knows ! The deskbar need some love in the (distant?) future and brainstorming about it might one day be useful :grinning:.

The Deskbar preferences are under Preferences already…

deskbar
So maybe the Desbar preferences in the the blue leaf menu should be removed ?

IMHO that whole section above the Shutdown menu is quite chaotic. There is search, there are mounts, there’s Show Replicants toggle, the Deskbar preferences and at the very top there is the menu item most of the users use exactly once: About this System. Some reorganization and improvements are definitely needed, but then there’s always someone who would argue that they got used to it, it’s perfect, and changes will make it worse, so I better not start that discussion.

Debatable. It’s a quick shortcut. I think I’ve always started the Deskbar preferences from that menu item… There are other shortcuts, e.g. the Time prefs from the context menu of the clock in the tray. I wouldn’t like to lose that either.

That’s often me, but not in this case: I rarely use anything there, maybe occasionally the preferences menu and sometimes the applications one (but I use LnLauncher for my frequently used apps, and sometimes #tart things from Terminal as that’s faster when I know them by name).

I think there is general agreement that DeskBar, and especially the menu, needs a rework. The question is then what to do with it, which I think Biloberis’ mockups explore in a good direction

So, flat design then.

Why are there two search bars? Also I’d suggest moving the system tray and time to the top. People are used to looking for time and status icons near screen corners and edges.
