I’m curious if anyone here has experience running Haiku on a system powered by an Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.50GHz processor (1333MHz FSB). I’m considering repurposing an older workstation with this CPU for lightweight use, and Haiku’s minimal footprint and responsiveness seem like a perfect fit.
A few specific questions:
- Does Haiku recognize all four cores of this Xeon processor correctly?
- Any issues with the 1333MHz front-side bus or chipset compatibility I should watch out for?
- How’s the general performance under Haiku for tasks like web browsing, file management, and coding?
- Would you recommend any specific BIOS or kernel settings for better stability or efficiency?

“Only one what to find out”, Attempt to boot from a pendrive in live mode, should be the safest, and fastest way to test things out.
As for the performance… Until my motherboard/PSU died on me some days ago, my main machine was a Phenom II X4 925, which I used to run Haiku both on bare-metal as under VBox/VMware, and to maintain and build the Python packages. Fast enough for me (for reference: full Python packages builds, with full optimizations and LTO, took about 40 mins in bare metal and about one hour on VMs).
Your link does not specifies the exact Xeon model you have (and I see many quad cores Xeons running at 2.5 GHz online), so can’t do a direct comparison. but I’m willing to bet it should be “fast enough”. It would be for me, at least, I think
(cries in running on a dual core netbook now).

Often older xeon workstations are not very power efficient… I have one I never use because the idle consumption is 100W without even considering the GPU.
However performance should be fine if it does work with haiku.
