Backup question

I’ve tested the backup of my system by creating an image and then copying my system to that image with the Installer.

Below on the left is my /boot/system and on the right the same but for my backup (image created & located on an external USB drive).

I was wondering if it’s normal to have the backup done only on some folders by the Installer app ?
If I restore my system with these missing folders, wouldn’t it be an issue ?

The missing folders don’t actually exist on the hard disk, instead they’re mounted from package contents using packagefs.
It’s fine that they’re missing in the backup, otherwise they would conflict when packagefs tries to mount the packages.
You should see them again when you try to boot your backup, packagefs will mount them then.

Great that was my assumption, thanks for confirming !

Does this mean that by creating an image you can basically clone your current system ad settings to any other computer?

Yes, that is exactly what it means. This implies that you need to be cautious. For example, if you’re using an USB key and are using it to make an install for friend because it would copy any settings saved. And that includes those that may be personal like passwords, bookmarks etc.

The Installer app does that, you don’t need to make an image for that.

What I mean is. If I have already installed it in one computer then I can create the image to move everything as it is in that. So not using the USB live installer after moving it to a computer, then I can install to USB and then install to second computer?

That’s handy.

You can also connect a new hard drive to your haiku system and use the installer to install it there. This installation will then include everything you have on your system. If you don’t want that, you should install from a clean haiku image.
