ArtPaint Drag&Drop

Very good to see progress on this great App.
Btw. for me drag n’ drop a image on the canvas should open a new Layer not a new project!
Is it possible btw. to add a picture layer?
And why does the canvas resize to the pic if dropped on it?

But great to have this app.

Thank you very much, hope you like working on it!

I suppose it’s a matter of taste. I do agree it would be nice to have a way to open a file as layer. There’s an open issue that I’ve just commented on.

Not sure what you mean exactly. Copy and pasting from one project to another will add the clipping in a newly created layer. There are issues around this, mentioned in the above linked issue.

Isn’t this the correct behaviour when a file gets opened, i.e. create a canvas fitting the whole image?

Maybe holding down ctrl while doing the drag and drop could add it as a layer?

Sure. Or negotiated drag’n’drop with the right mouse button, similar to dropping a clipping from ShowImage: show a context menu with “Open as new project” and “Open as new layer”.
Further discussions please in a new forum thread or at ArtPaints bugtracker.

I am sure lots of people expect by drag n’ drop a new Picture Layer.

Look, for Wonderbrush you can do that too, but which shortcut?

Do you know it beforehand? No, but it is possible, and lots of User do not
know that this works!

By open a new Picture-Layer, the user recognize how it works, and will create a New Canvas if he will make a new project! It is intuitive just do it and it works!

Even copy and paste do not work in Artpaint, it will create a new project, why?
In Wonderbrush nothing happens at all if you try copy n’ paste a image on a project…

Feel free to make a new discussions in a new forum thread or at ArtPaints bugtracker.

I kinda agree that the default behavior to be adding a new layer with the dropped image in it is what make most sense, after all when you drop a file in a tracker window, the default action is to import (move) the file in the document displayed, which is a folder content, not to open a new folder with the dropped file in it.

And in the case user wants to actually create a new art paint document, he just have to cut or copy this layer and paste it into a new, empty document.

The best being dynamic / negociated drag and drop with a popup menu offering the choice, with default being new layer.

Most professional graphics software on other platforms handles it this way: If you drop a file onto the canvas, it places it in the document as a new layer. If you drop it on any other part of the user interface (maybe excluding the Layers panel), such as the window frame, it opens it as a separate document.

IMO this makes sense. The idea with right mouse dragging opening a popup menu also sounds like a good idea, since this could offer additional useful choices (“Open as document”, “Place embedded”, “Place linked”, “Place embedded expanding layers”, “Place and scale to fit”, “Place as layer mask” or similar).
