ArsTechnica Review of R1/Beta2

So I am wonder it is not Web+ it’s fault if Qmplay2 behaves same!?

These are probably resource management bugs in app_server which watching videos tend to trigger. If the whole GUI is locked up then something happened in app_server. Probably some developers need to try to reproduce this and then go into KDL to see what the issues are. Though it probably is not a simple thing or it would have been fixed already.

Then testing WebPositive, I sometimes get GUI freezing and 100% CPU core usage in low resource manager kernel thread. Sometimes is also occurs in test_app_server. I don’t know what is happening, memory, semaphore and area usage seems to be far from limit values.

Possibly. The behavior is different in that the web+ crashes go to the white screen terminate whereas qmp2 looks very similar to what one can see in linux systems sometimes where the mouse moves but mouse clicks and keyboard presses have no effect. But that seems to support a possible bug in app_server.

I tested this a bit more today. Had youtube running on autoplay for about an hour with no issue. Then I started playing another youtube video at the same time using QMP2. About 10 minutes later, crashed with the white screen.

Then I got to remembering when things crashed. Was always when I played youtube while downloading or streaming something else. So far it’s either been another video or substantial updated via haiku depot.

Could be a coincidence but after that, I played youtube on autoplay while not doing much else. Was still going strong after 3 hours, then web+ crashed but in the nice way that gives you the option to close, take a dump, etc. I was able to close and am now playing youtube videos again. I’ll see how it goes this time.

This is acceptable enough for me to use as my main non-work daily driver.

I forgot, Web+ was updated on this system before all of this. Currently on

Web+ 1.2 Alpha
HaikuWebkit 1.7.0
WebKit 610.1.9
Haiku R1/Beata2(Revision hrec54154+116) x86_gcc2

Final Update this week: I was able to restart web+ after the soft crash and play youtube videos and nothing else for 36 minutes before it crashed again. This time with the white screen that needed a reboot.

I suspect this is not explicitly Youtube+WebPositive. I’ve had it happen twice when starting a video, but three times now just when doing something trivial like going to change Workspaces. I haven’t been very good at documenting, but I’ll try to pay more attention next time!

There is a bug report in (#15728) and ISTR Waddlesplash says it has happened to him, too. Appears to be a mystery ATM.

Sorry to be unclear, by “reinventing the wheel” I meant “another gp OS”.

I try to explain in a different way: I really hate MacOS “approach” and I’ve already used Linux (Mint) for office work for a year without any big issues, but to me - an old Windows and OS/2 user - both are rather “unfriendly” in media creation field.
So Windows is better ? No, but at least is quite easy to use/understand and gives users a large choice of softwares and drivers.

Of course I’ve always dreamed an open source OS that could attract media creation software producers but, until will exist (probably never), unfortunally I can’t leave Windows.

That’s why the gp-orientation of Haiku disappoints me a bit, anyway I always support - in any way I can (since i’m not a dev) - alternatives.

Please understand me that this is not (nor can’t / won’t be) a criticism, that’s only MY feelings towards Haiku. Consider it when you read my posts/comments.

Surely all you are asking for is some audio/video/image creation software for Haiku. Or is there something else that I am missing because you haven’t explained it?

Once Haiku has a decent web browser (one way of doing this is to find people prepared to invest time in improving Web+) it will be a superb general purpose OS. And a good platform on which to do other things.

You’re being as extreme and fanatical as you accuse others of being.
The big American software companies are very clever, but they are using their cleverness to spy on and manipulate users of their software. That’s why many people don’t like them.

Microsoft have some great products, people and technology, and undertake some good endeavours. But they also have a lot that is not great. Installing software and drivers under windows is archaic. Personally I find the UI confusing and not very well thought out, the command line even worse, and in general their operating systems frustrating to use. But that is all qualitative.

What is fact though, is that MS are proven to collude with the NSA and GCHQ, illegally [1, 2, 3]. They have gotten to the position they are in not because no one can create a better product, but often because they have a monopoly, and there are many court cases where they have been shown to illegally destroy competitors positions in the market to maintain that monopoly [4, 5]. Be and BeOS are prime examples of victims of such practices, since Microsoft refused to sell Windows licenses to OEMs (computer manufacturers) that also offered their systems preinstalled with BeOS [6].

I am not a Mac OS fan either BTW, I find it even more frustrating to use (and apple also have things like planned obsolescence). But I’m just saying MS are not saints.

No, it isn’t 'cause it’s not free and freedom is always the most important thing.
That’s why I replaced everything I can with open source counterpart in Windows (and I support/promote ReactOS too).

Yes and no. I believe that a media-creation oriented OS should focus on develop/port multimedia libraries, drivers, frameworks etc. that - IMHO - could attract media creation software producers and users.

I don’t think that majority of software producers (nor users) would change so easily from well known-spreaded multiplatform browsers to a “decent” - or even wonderful - platform-dependent browser.
That’s another reason why I don’t think that the gp-goal will not help to spread Haiku.

BTW, again, it’s just my opinion.

Well, I think you may be underestimating the degree of dissatisfaction with Microsoft. And the degree of difficulty Linux typically poses to non-technical people trying to flee Windows.

As for competing on the basis of Haiku being focused on media creation, that means doing a better job than Adobe (and one or two others). First, that won’t be at all easy (for all practical purposes impossible), and second, people who have invested years of their lives becoming expert in Adobe software are going to be very hard to persuade to try something else.

This forum is about Haiku. If you so like Microsoft and Windows, there are likely better places exist to share your opinions. What are you wanting from Haiku community?

I am agree with that, but it is unrelated to Haiku. Haiku is unrelated to GNU project, use MIT license, not GPL and do not reject proprietary/paid software.

Hidden because you are insulting people and generally being aggressive. And also completely off-topic here.

I have no problems with your opinions about Microsoft and you can think what you want about Linux unconditional supporters, but that’s no reason to be insulting.

I’m now closing the topic because this discussion is not going anywhere.
