Haiku scripting is another one of those latent gems just waiting to be exploited.

Updates to follow
Sen Labs has a website now! I just saw this in the annual update on SubStack. If you have a SubStack account and want to see the post, there is an email subscription link at the bottom of the Sen Labs landing page. Also there is source on GitHub.
Since @grexe teased updates to this thread, I’ll let him post what he wants when he wants to.
haha I see what you did there but thanks but you already did the most part for me;-)
The term “annual update” hurts but is quite fitting (was meant to be a recap but grew somehow) but I’ll definitely provide more regular updates in 2025.
Are you guys OK with checking out the Substack post or should I cross-post here?
I’d rather write up a short Haiku-community-specific update in a separate thread then.
You can find the recap here, all posts are free but you"re very welcome to support the project with a paid subscription or sponsor SEN Labs on Github:
Since of 30/12/2024, all parts of SEN are now open source and being built in public, but please hold back a little until you seriously check out anything, it’s still under heavy development and needs to be cleaned up.
PS: The web site is more of a stand-in right now, just wanted to put something out there. I’m more of a backend developer I guess, and things have gotten so complicated with all that fuzz. Maybe ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini can help:)
If you need help, let us know! I chipped in a donation already. I’m looking forward to learning how to set this up! I know you’re working hard on the code but documentation is needed too.
Thanks a lot, it’s very much appreciated!
Please bear with me a little longer, first I have to finish the main infrastructure and interaction, then I can only start with developer documentation, and after that some higher level and user docs… don’t try this at home yet…
Will this feature be implemented as a 3rd party add-on to Tracker or do you have the intention to merge it to Tracker codebase?
If it would be almost ready, it could become one of the new “shiny” features of beta6 or later release.
SEN is a separate project but MIT licensed and open source, and I’m always willing to cooperate and contribute to Haiku.
It’s not a simple Tracker addon but really an umbrella for my vision of a modern semantic desktop in 202x.
SEN is still in prototype stage and consists of different parts that make up a semantic infrastructure or lightweight layer between the Haiku filesystem and applications like Tracker or integrated external apps like BePDF.
Then there is the configuration which is entirely integrated into the native file type system and can be defined as native resource definition files for easier exchange.
That said, it’s too early to integrate anything, but you’re welcome to check it out, follow my blog on Substack and - please if you can afford it and want to see the project grow - support it via Github sponsorship or a paid subscription on Substack.
It is so nice thought through and great example with food and that kind.
Would it be suitable for medical instruments as well?
How many attributes HAIKU Befs can take?
sorry for the late reply and thanks so much for the encouraging words!
It is a lightweight unobtrusive semantic filesystem “layer” based on BFS attributes and some magic in the background for resolving relations from SEN specific attributes and from well defined relationship attributes configured in FileTypes (the latter being completely open to how users configure them).
So yes, it’s bascially usable for anything you can come up - if it makes sense depends on your use case.
SEN is targeted at personal knowledge management, so it’s not for any medical application, but if you want to personally research medical instruments, that would be a possible use case.
Just give me some time to finish the core implementation and implement some primary use cases, along with a good description and more documentation…
I’ll be at PKM Summit 2025 in Utrecht, so if anyone is in the area, be sure to check it out - I will certainly use the opportunity to advertise Haiku and its unique strengths there, too.
We are waiting for a short report on the experience at the PKM Summit 2025!
Sure, I’m coding the missing parts of the demo use cases and will share the presentation after the conference.
I got some discounted tickets if any of you want to come, just use this link for a 20% discount:
Is there aprerelease of sen yet? Do you plan to distribute your own haiku-sen or can it be added to an existing haiku install?
I would love to try it, even when not finished
Thanks for your interest - I really have to start a new thread and leave this one in the past, it was originally only about the PKG book…
I want to push out a tech preview real soon now ™ but need to finish the core first, including a simple default setup (including a personal ontology) to use.
I am just now adding creating new relations from Tracker, for example.
When this comes together in a MVP way, I’ll offer both:
- a set of neat Haiku packages, and
- an image similar to the nightlies with SEN baked in (need to check wrt Haiku distribution guidelines first)
In the meantime, I’ll also reach out for support and funding to keep the project going… (hint, hint:)
Thank you for the quick answer, unfortunately funding is a bit tight right now;), might change in 3-6 months
