You may under-estimate the volume of people who dont say anything about AI because they have seen the reactions it causes. It is clear that there is a strong feeling among the majority of moderators and developers here, which very often leads to heated discussions where most of those people weigh in. This will put off many people from expressing any opinion at all or even openly discussing the issues, because it does not really seem possible to do so in a balanced or non-confrontational way.
Personally I dont believe that putting forth an opinion and making it clear that there is no room for debate and never will be, is reasoned discussion. I think that the AI ethics problem has many sides and is constantly developing, and policies regarding it therefore need careful consideration and probably revision.
The current situation in the forums here feels a bit oppressive, honestly, and it is undoubtedly pushing people away. I know it is wearing me down. Writing this, I am somewhat concerned by the replies I may get. But, I feel it should probably be said, and maybe it can provide a pause for thought
