Greetings,
Other app that could be usefull to make Haiku a more popular OS is a port of a science - engineering program, like some MATLAB, MAPLE and Mathematica. One program that is very mature and is open source is Scilab. In the next address is the access to the download page for the source for the linux and win port.

I think this is a matter to consider.
Thanks
It seems that some people has seen this post. I’ve been wondering how difficoult would be to make a port of this program. Also I’ve watched in BeBits that there is a port of a GNU utility named Octave (www.octave.org).
I think is a good proyect to develop either with Scilab or Octave. I’ve talked with a friend of mine that is into computer science, and we might start a proyect to port any of this programs. Anybody that has information in how we can compile the linux code into Haiku (BeOS R5 PE for now), or suggestions, please answer this post.
Thanks
I would love to see Scilab ported to BeOS/Haiku…
But the source tarball is around 14 MB, and, AFAICT, there are lots of dependencies (TCL/TK, for example).
Looks like a lot of work… specially since few of us will have a use for it. Sad that I’m one of those who could make use of it :-/

Well, I belive the first step would be getting the full code including all the Fortran/C/C++ libs. I think the amount of work would depend in the compatibility of the libraries with BeOS/Haiku. I don’t belive that few people would have the need for a program like this. I hope there is more, since it would be “useless” to do a great work for a missused software.
