Position 31 - Who let the crunchers out?

Yeah, as prognosed we gained another slot tonight. Now we’re up to slot 31 and steaming ahead like always. On the negative side… it’ll take some days before we’re up to slot 30. and more before we’re in the top 2X league.

however, it’s all about hard work, so keep it on it people and add extra boxes if you can =)

From 45 to 31 in one month. That’s great!!

It would be nice if we could keep going at that pace, but the gaps are bigger. I also hope minbari is not on a permanent hiatus.

Getting out of second pass would be great since it will hopefully give us a bigger chance of finding a prime. The general feeling I got from the forums is that the one they did find in second pass made sense, but that there probably isn’t any others to be found in the current second pass testing.

One important thing that came out of the lengthy secondpass was a better understanding of the error rate generated during the first pass. This will give a better idea of the probability of a missed prime going forward and allow the administrators to adjust the second-pass queue accordingly.

I see TeamHaiku taking position 30 in the near the future.
Say 1AM EST time.

Good job TeamHaiku!

I’m fixing a laptop for a friend. Recovered some data with knoppix and reinstalled windows. Haven’t seen her recently to give it back, so f igured I’d run some SoB. Its a 2.66 P4, when I start it it gets up to about 1.1M/s. After like 2 minutes of running, the computer shuts down. I assume its overheating…

Anyone ever seen something like this before? Is this a bad sign for this laptop in general? Any way, or settings, to fix it? (for example, tried running it at low, but it still happened). It is an HP–, I hate HP laptops. Not suprising to me if it just overheats under load.

Yes, my new machine overheated when I turned off the internal CPU thermal protection (a feature of the newer P4s I gather) - and then started up SoB - ASUS Probe reported a temp of >80C before it shut down (i had it polling every 5 secs, so I’m guessing it actually hit 90C which is the internal shutoff on my processor) Turned out to be bad joint between heatsink and processor - a dab of Arctic Silver 5 did the trick

Running SoB in “low” or “Idle” priority won’t change anything, that just determines how it behaves when multitasking. When nothing else is loading up the CPU, it will still run at full speed. (I recommend Low rather than Normal, btw - it’s very little difference in SoB performance, yet it makes the machine more usable in windows for other tasks)

For laptops, it’s harder because the limited heatsink/fan space.

If possible, install the power-management software from the hardware manufacturer (You did say you installed windows right?) – and also check the power management settings in the BIOS. There should be a way to manage the processor such that it scales back when it gets too hot. If anything, you can probably control the SpeedStep and knock it back a bit (underclock it essentially) so it doesn’t get too hot.

My Celeron 450mhz laptop gets pretty hot, and I use the software it came with to drop it down from “Full” power to “High” power (one step down) which makes it run decently. I also have the fan speed set to “Performance” rather than “Quiet” to make sure it’s blowing at maximum RPM.

Ultimately, laptops really aren’t made for load - a friend of mine has an aftermarket base for his laptop complete with 2 huge cooling fans and a separate power supply just to keep the thing cool enough so he can use it for gaming at home (it’s his only computer)…

For your friend’s standard usage, Iwouldn’t worry about it too much, most people don’t load their laptops to the point of overheating.

Oh yeah, and HPs do suck

One more thing, make sure it either finishes an entire test, or copy the residue file out of the SB directory and finish it on another computer… you don’t want to leave a proth test incomplete, it could be prime!

If you ever do lose a residue file, and can’t finish the proth test, you can always “Expire” it in your Preferences under Pending Tests… but it’s nice to finish them so they don’t end up in the “Dropped Tests” queue.
