hey all I’ve recently become interested in BeOS, and I was wondering about some of its compatibility. Soon i will be aquiring 2 macintosh g3 laptops for an incredible cheap amount and i was planning to put linux on one, and BeOS on the other. I was wondering if there are any distros of BeOS compatiable with macintosh’s g3 ibook. Thanks
Regards,

I suspect in order to run BeOS on a PPC machine you’ll have to pick up a copy of R5 Pro for PPC as I’m not aware of any maintained PPC distros (I’m pretty sure there was no R5PE version for PPC to base a distro on)…
You can run an x86 version in Bochs or QEMU under Linux or OSX I think, but it will be slow.
beos r5 is only compatible with pre-g3 ppc’s (and of those only the pci ones; no nubus)
but if the ppc-branch of haiku works some day, it should be compatible with newer systems.
the only thing you can do now, is either use another OS or another computer.
(of course you could start maintaining the ppc-branch of haku, too…)
good luck,
b.
