Thanks for the support!

No problem-o. Seems like a cool project. Too bad they don’t support PowerPC or I’d have another box. Are there any plans to make a PPC compatible client? Is there anywhere that the communication protocol with the server is well spec’d out; I’d consider writing one. Also too bad the source isn’t open or it’d be (fairly) trivial and undoutedly already done =\

I do have an older P4 box sitting around, but its hardrive was cannabalized. I’m thinking I’m gonna boot it with Slax or Knoppix and set it up though. Its quick enough to setup that I can do it anytime I need a reboot. That should be fairly infrequent anyway if all its doing is sitting there and crunching numbers. In fact, some lighter gui-less distrobution with sshd by default would probably be best. Wouldn’t even need to plug it into the KVM!

If you read the SoB FAQ (if you can find it … ) it sort of explains why the source is closed.

I suspect it’s mostly due to the lack of trust in “hackers” that will chop up the client software to produce false results in the interest of increasing their stats. It also appears that the grunt work is done with x86 assembler.

They do specify that the next “3.0” frontend client will be written in Java, but will still have a “native” backend (written in x86 assembler still I presume) to keep performance and security intact.

Get that other P4 box running!

Alright, got that P4 running. Its a 1.8ghz-- like I said no hardrive, patched it together half bad video card and a slow ass CD rom though, and booted D amn Small Linux (tiny Knoppix derivative). That should be 24/7. I got permission to run it at work, so that will be on pretty much 24/7 too (AMD Athlon 2000+). Also, theres an old computer we use at my house (I live in a 44 person house on Georgia Tech’s campus) as a kiosk to controll our music server. I administrate that, so its running it now too :). All told, here is what I bring:

AMD Athlon 2200+ (desktop, may be turned off from time to time)
AMD Athlon 2000+ (work machine, basically 24/7)
Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz (frankenstein machine, nothing better to do!)
AMD Athlon 1Ghz (kiosk, might be sporadic cuz people fsck with it)

Also, I should soon be ordering a network card for my other box I plan on setting up with BeOS Max, as my BeOS/Haiku devel platform. Since there is a BeOS version, that can chug away sometimes too (800mhz Duron). There also may be another compy or two around the house I can get running-- though they will be slow!

EDIT: put it on the communal computer in our library-- 850mhz athlon. Like the music kiosk, no promises cuz ppl will mess with it. can’t hut though!

All this new power should help boost us a little. Go TeamHaiku!

Heh, nice… your machines are all pretty decent actually!

I bring some pretty weak machines to the mix myself… among my offerings are a P200MMX, a Celeron 450mhz laptop, my PIII600, a crappy Via C3 800mhz (runs about the same as the laptop) and a PIII800 here at work.

Some “heavy hitters” are my P4 3.4ghz w/HT work machine, my in-laws’ P4 2.8 w/HT home machine, and my newly installed P4 3.0ghz w/HT machine at home - which is not running terribly well right now (not full speed for some reason) – i suspect the motherboard is screwed up.

I have access to some good machines here at work, but I don’t use them right now as I don’t really have permission, and would hate to get in trouble.

I may add another couple P200 machines if I get around to it… they’re certainly not worth much, but everything counts right?
